How many pictures should it hold, do I need to purchase a memory card? I'm clueless to the digital camera world. THANKS!

Get what the Pros use. Canon dSLR with a Canon Fast Long lens. Canon makes the fastest most durable lenses for the Sports Photo Professional. When you see a pro football games look at all the big white lenses. Those are the Canon Professional L series of lenses. Big, Fast, Heavy, & Expensive. They can't afford to loose a shot. They have to have reliable top quality equipment. They can afford anything they want. They buy Canon. You can scale down and not have a problem. A Canon 30D or 20D would be more than enough camera for your needs. Get a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS L lens. You will need fast glass because you will be shooting at night under stadium lights. You will not be able to get a flash that will reach out all the way across a football field. You will need Image Stabilization for freehand shooting to get crystal clear shots. Fast glass will help freeze the action with a faster shutter speed. This lens is water tight and will not be a problem if you shoot from under a raincoat or umbrella with the lens exposed to rain or snow.

If you get this lens for action you need a wide angle lens for normal shooting. Look at the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens for that work. Great lens for general photography.

If your want to scale down even further then look at the Canon Powershot Pro1. It has an 28-200mm f/2.4-3.5 L lens on a consumer grade camera.

I'm a Hasselblad & Nikon user for film in a studio, but switched to Canon for all digital work and anything outside of the studio.

Unless you go to a single lens reflex digital (SLR) you will always have a problem with digital action shots. You push the button when you think the action is great but the camera waits most of a second to take the picture. The speed of the photograph is OK but the delay till it happens is really bad news. Your will usually miss the action.

If you are not going to spend over $500 for an SLR you should stick to film cameras that don't have that electronics delay.

I love those big, professional digital cameras by nikkon. they cost around $800, but well worht it, especially if you are taking action shots.
the cameras come with a memory card, but usually, they do not hold much storage (maybe 10 pictures?) It's best to buy a separate memory stick. ask about them when you go to purchase a new camera. how much storage you get is a personal preference...how much space do you think you'd need? they make memory sticks that can hold over 300 pictures.
