. . . Carlos Casteneda?

If you have, what do you think of his experiences? Just curious.

A lot of my friends read those in college. I myself found them mildly interesting (the concept of "seeing" as opposed to looking was useful) but I think Castaneda was trying too hard to be esoteric. The books just didn't resonate with me. His words didn't ring true, and nothing in the books convinced me that Don Juan Matus ever existed. Besides, I don't need the aid of psychotropic plants to seek truth and fulfillment.

true or not carlos castaneda's stories have a real place in literature. true, exaggerated, falsified, or otherwise the work is beautiful. many people remain believers in life as is portrayed in "the teachings" so who does that hurt? it only hurts the fearful. i know a shaman; he takes annual foot trips to mexico, about 500 miles from here, for peyote. he heals the sick in his tribe, ushers boys into manhood, and does many things a closed mind would consider impossible. because someone says this is untrue or impossible does it make it so? if i said you have pink hair, then it must mean you have pink hair. my point is this; my truth doesn't have to be yours. your truth will never be mine. all of our perspectives come from different places, some further apart than others. many consider carlos castaneda one of the best authors of our time, others the best teacher of our time, and yet others consider him a heretic, the best selling liar of our time. with all of those opinions, carlos' truth remains the same. to me, don juan matus isn't real. it never happened, because it never happened to me. and yet, i can take words and feelings from carlos castaneda's work and apply them in my life when and how i need. if that isn't real?

He turned out to have made much of it up.

I was interested in that stuff back in high school, but I outgrew it.

Haven't, yet; but he's on my list. Wayne Dyer seems to respect his work, and I like a lot of what Dyer says.
