Yes, listen to Melissa.
Look at dogs in the wild: They Dig. They are made by nature to dig. It is instinct. It is entertainment and necessity to them.
It is also almost impossible to cure completely.
SO: make him a sandbox where he is encouraged to dig. Bury a few stinky bones in the sand to show him here is a good place for digging. If you make this effort you will have a happier dog and therefore you will have less hassles in life.
Dogs NEED to dig, so let him dig - in one place only, with clearly defined borders that he can see and understand without any confusion. Whack him for digging anywhere else, and drop him in the sandbox.

If he's a terrier - good luck! They were bred to dig.
Give him something else to do. Provide fun toys or play with him while he is in the yard.
If he is digging in one place, put some chicken wire an inch or two below the surface, then cover it with dirt. Or, put some of his feces in the hole and cover it. He should find this unpleasant enough that he stops digging.
Another option is to give him a sand box or corner of the yard where digging is acceptable. Bury toys and treats to encourage him to dig in that spot; discourage digging in all other places by removing him from those areas and taking him to his digging place.

He shouldn't be outside by himself so squirt him with water when he is digging. Be sure to say no before you squirt him. Once you get his attention with the water toss him a ball or other toy.

Put a little pepper in the dirt where he digs. That'll stop it!

build a dog house over it then he wont dig.
