Does your gym have a pool? I've had fantastic results from water aerobics. I have various routines on my blog (I posted one maybe a week ago, you'll have to search for the other ones). I've lost 11 inches from my waist in about a year with no surgery and not a huge amount of dieting (Slimfast a few meals a week, mostly at-my-desk lunches).

I don't recommend any one try weightlifting at the start of an exercise program. Especially if you are using a scale to track your results (and who doesn't, right?). Spend the first few weeks concentrating on cardio, and be sure to stretch after. If you are not sweating when you are doing cardio, you are wasting your time. Sweating is an indication that your body is in "fat burning" mode. Also, if your cardio is so intense that you don't have enough breath for conversation, you aren't burning fat.
After 2 or 3 weeks, add weights. Try the website listed below. They have many different kinds of programs listed and give great explanations so that you can determine which is best for you, and how to do the exercises properly. All the programs are written by qualified trainers. And it's all free.
Good Luck!

Hi
Congratulations on your decision to lose weight and get fit.
A membership to a gym is a good place to start.
You'll need to speak to a fitness instructor about a cardio plan and ways to avoid getting bored. They will select a plan specifically for your needs.
You will need to change your eating habits as well for any long term weight loss.
My advice for this:
Avoid processed foods high in fat and sodium.
Eat smaller meals throughout the day with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
Avoid caffeine and sugary foods.
Purchase foods that are healthy. Whole foods, grains, protein, almonds, and drink ate least 8- 10 glasses of cold water every day.
Walk at least 20- 30 minutes, 3 times a day.
Good Luck and hang in there!!
Let me know how you do.

IMHO, focusing on regular and stable and reasonable eating patterns that you can live with but still enjoy is most important.
Exercise is a great catalyst & good for health, but I've watched someone struggle w/ weight for years (she used to go to the gym at 5am, ex for hours, eat healthy all day & undo it all in the evening) & she says it's like 99% about your food and 1% about your exercise.
But, you should still exercise but think of it as if you were already thin or at your ideal weight. What would you do? A slow walk after dinner? Stretches? Yoga? Take extra flight of stairs? Try to incorporate reasonable SMALL exercise every day & focus on eating well.
Good luck!
