How long is too long? I was in the Military for thirty years, stationed all over the world, fought in two wars and my life since I retired is pretty normal. I added to my education and got a secure job, bought a nice home in a nice area, and have been living life the American way since.
The Army gave me self confidence, leadership abilities, the ability to work side by side with all sexes, races and creeds, and gave me a sense of purpose that my life was about something. I rose to the top in the ranks, despite having many hurdles to overcome. Ten years after retirement I still have a feeling of fulfillment when I think of my Army career. I love my new civilian life, and I have never looked backwards with any trepidation about what I was and have become.

Today's army is differnt than that of a few years ago.....you are almost certain to change if you are on the battle field...and you will be on the battle field....they also don't have to let you out just because your term is up...they can promise you a million different things, but if you don't have it in WRITING THEN DON'T BELIVE IT!!!!!!!!! They could tell you that your job will be one thing at the recruiting office...and then once you are through boot camp, they can give you whatever job that they want to ...and there is nothing that you can do about it!

Don't believe the hype that all of these kids coming home without a hand or a foot, or without their lives period...wanted to be there....because it is not true....there is something in the Armed Forces called the Uniform Code of Military Justice....this is also referred to as the UCMJ....basically it is 100+ laws that Military members must obey in addition to the regular laws of the county, state, and country. One of those laws states that you are not to speak in bad terms about the President of the United States....so there is no wonder that politicans always say, "When I talked to the troops, they were happy to be in Iraq."....not always the case...but it is illeagle for them to say so if they don't want to be there! Not fair to quote them is it?!

Just know that there are right reasons to go...and wrong reasons to go....search your soul....and then make your choice....are you willing to die for this country...or are you prepared to be understanding that you will become "government property"...no different than a pen or a bench...a piece of property that you no longer have control over? It won't matter if you want to be there or not...once your in....you go where you are told...PERIOD! You do what you are told to do, and your opinion is not asked for nor is it desired! Afterall, it is no longer your life.....you are theirs and you are EXPENDABLE!

Some people can roll with it, others can't ....but you will not leave there the same person that you came...it is simply impossible...and yes I am a veteran, and that is how I know!

You will defintely mature (grow up) becaue the Army or any branch of service will provide you with a very structured environment and rules to live by everyday. You will become a stronger person and proabably look at things differently than you do now. After you are in th eservice for a while life lightens up the rules are there but you have a little more freedom and flexiblity than you did when you were in basic training. Also if you have to serve in combat I do believe that you see life in a whole new light because there is life and death and in order to save you life you may have to cause the death of someone and to some that can be very difficult.

In the Marines 4yrs and personally I didnt appreciate alot that i had before now i appreciate everything even some of the bad stuff dont seem as bad. Some habits are hard to break though, sporting short hair , respecting others more, and being more patient. Not to say the past still comes up sometime I am a better man after the Marines!

The first change occurs in basic training where a person really grows up; learning to care for their equipment, themselves, and their team-mates.

The second change occurs at the first work place - known as a duty station; a person learns the unit work ethic...may even learn to work through the night without sleep.

The most critical changes occur when the "soldier" goes to war and learns first hand how truly horrible war is...
and if the soldier fights a muslim enemy...the soldier learns how sick and cowardly that enemy is.

The last change is coming home...the sense of patriotism, pride of service, accomplishment...make that soldier feel that going back and doing it again would be worthwhile.

If they are in the army too long...they become someone who wakes up early, works 10 hours without complaint Monday through Sunday, shows more respect for self and others, has a greater sense of appreciation for hardship, and an enormous amount of respect for life.

I was in the Army for 8 years...saw 2 wars and a peace keeping action.

You can't stay in the military "too" long. The military is a rough but good life. It's definitely not for everyone. Most men (and women) that join mature. They learn responsibility. They also learn how to take care of themselves and be individuals. They're given a good start for a career....you can either stay in and retire or take what you learn to the civilian world. I personally, think that you have less tolerance for ignorance once you've served. You get tired of people complaining and taking the "free ride" but aren't willing to do anything to help or change things. You gain alot of pride and respect for yourself and others.

That depends on their duty. First of all, military service builds confidence in most people, and increases general agressiveness. Combat duty can have many different affects.

Not everyone who serves in the military, or even combat duty, for that matter, suffers ill efects. Some people grow from their experiences.

You will have more discipline and you will learn how to kill without compunction only in wartime. If our country is attacked by a foreign enemy, you will remember how to do it. Even if you're 70. It's like a switch, or riding a bike.

They get older and wiser.
When somebody is in the army for too long...they get retired.
Or are you loking for answers like..
"they become killers and rapists".
Is that what you aiming for?
