You do know you don't have to have any kind of food at the reception. You can serve your cake and punch and let it go at that. There's no rules that say you have to feed your quests.
It is nice to have a little something, but if you can't afford to do it, then don't stress about it. But, I am going to give you a few suggestions because if you want to have a few then these are going to be your bargins and people enjoy them:

Fingersandwichs. you can make these yourselves the day before, cut them into triangles and wrap them up real good and place in the refrigator. You can make all different kinds,
chicken salad, ham salad, egg salad, tuna salad (leave out the onions in everything) you could buy sliced roast, turkey, chicken
and have a variety.

Cheese trays, again you can do these yourself, buy different kinds of block cheese and cut into little squares and place them on pretty platter and surround them with crackers

vegetable trays, buy different veggies, cauliflower, brocilli, carrots
celery, tommy toed tomatos, wash and cut up, wrap real well, place into the refrigator, buy a few dips (ranch, buttermilk, or you can make them up from mixs)

cheese balls are a favorite, you can make one and serve with cracker- or you can buy one all ready to serve..

cocktail sausage, crock pot, great time saver, cover with bar-b-que sauce

meatballs-crockpot, another time saver, cover with can or jarred spaghetti sauce.

Do you have a bulk discount store around your area? Like Sams.
You can get some good bargins there.

You can make macaroni salad, that's a crowd pleasure-cheap macaroni, washed tuna, mayo, whatever else you like in it, peas, olives,

I hope this helps you a little. You can do most of this stuff yourself, and save a bundle. Or you can order them, but expect to sometimes pay quite a bit, Call around and check out some prices, then you have an idea of what you are looking at. It's work, but most of the things can be made ahead and kept cold.

Have the girls over, and have a sandwich making party! That's what I did with making the favors for my daughter's wedding. We had the best time, and it was relaxing and we got more done for the wedding then I had ever hoped for.

Have the most wonderful wedding......

God bless us all.....

there are many you can choose from,

you can try spreads instead of cheese to serve with crackers

stuffed mushrooms

wraps to give sandwiches a little "dress up"

also if there is a theme, you can always try to get finger foods that suit them

sweet & sour meatballs, lil cocktail franks wrapped in bacon w/ brown sugar sprinkled on top

also, instead of the traditional fruit platter..you can try fruit salsa w/ cin & sugar tortilla chips, very easy to make (have the recipe if you want) and this can be made days in advance.

what i did for my wedding reception is crackers and cheese, dips i.e. spinach and ranch dip for my veggies; i.e. brocolli, califlower, olives,(black and green), small tomatoes, then we also did some fruit dips with oranges, melons, etc. with nuts too.. with what was leftover we took on our honeymoon to the cabin we were staying at. it cut back on the food we had to buy for the cabin. :-) i later found out that my mom was wondering where all the food was, tee hee.. we took it.. :) and you can always do the finger sandwiches too; i.e. tuna, chicken, sliced turkey, ham, etc. with some cheeses to go with it and some sandwich rolls to make them a sandwich.. we also had our cake and punch and m&m's and candy canes for everyone too. ;) we did it all on a budget and food cost us for all that was about $200 dollars. the cakes were free b/c that was a present that my friend did for us. punch was free also b/c my grandma had been making it since we announce our engagement. ;) good luck and congrats.

Head over to Sam's Club or Costco, they do all sorts of fruit and veggie platters, meat and cheese platters, shrimp cocktail platters, they even have those frozen little baby quiches that are great. If you're willing to put the work into fixing stuff yourself, you could do the whole thing from Sam's or Costco relatively inexpensively.

Be careful of which foods you serve at your reception. You really don't want to risk stains by having foods dipped in sauces, or having guests with sticky fingers touching your gown.
Some inexpensive yet tasteful ideas for Hors D'ouevres are:
A cheese plate with deli meats and toasted sliced french bread (bread stales as it sits, so toast ahead of time)
Proschuitto wrapped crudite (an italian salami wrapped around veggies like cauliflower, red/yellow/green bell peppers, and fennel)
Cucumber slices topped with a lox cream cheese (you don't use much lox (lox is smoked salmon, try it... it is delicious))
Strawberries dipped in chocolate
Cherries dipped in chocolate (cut in half and place on toothpicks)
For a play on pigs in a blanket: take cocktail weiners and canned crescent rolls, separate the rolls and cut them in half lengthwise, roll up the cocktail weiners and bake.)
An easier way to do this is to buy Sister Schuberts rolls with cocktail weiners baked inside.

Some little sandwiches with chicken salad, or tuna salad, egg salad. Ritz with cheese on them.

You could also do some bbq sausages, that is always a winner!

Pates are cheap, you can do some plates with some nice cheese, olives and meats and Pates. Also just simple fruit platers are great.
