I was looking for a few ideas for a Halloween costume idea that I can make for my 9 year old step-daughter.
She was an angel last year ( I made it with out a pattern...was very pretty ) and a fairy the year before.

Halloween for us isn't about scarey evil...its about dressing up, spending time as a family, and (mostly for my nephews and my step-daughter) All about going out to get candy.
Halloween is not evil!
***Besides, I don't want to debate the right and wrong of Halloween...I was only looking for some new costume ideas!!!!!***

I love the birds idea! Otherwise a regular zombie would be great, just use some old clothes, stain them up a bit then use white glue and makeup for the zombie look itself. If you're handy at sewing you could make a 'prom' dress out of an old sheet, a bit of dye etc. or even a shower curtain. If not, and you really want the prom route, try a second hand store.

I made a mermaid costume for my niece last year. I bought 1 yd of green sequin material from Walmart and made a tube from her waist to her knees with a drawstring at the top. At the bottom,I sewed a floor length ruffle of green tulle. For the top get her a flesh colored leotard and sew some gold lame scallop shells over the strategic areas. You can glue small sea shells to a plastic headband for a tiara. A great touch would be a cheap long red wig ala the Little Mermaid. She loved it!!

Go to Familyfun.com - This magazine's website has so much for kids of all ages. There are some really creative ideas! Last year I loved their take on King Kong.
It consisted of a person wearing a cardbord box made to looke like a building . They then attached a stuffed gorilla on the outside(attempting to climb the building).
It was very cool.
They offer alot of different ideas every year.

It would be easy to be a rock star, hippie, etc by decorating your own clothes. Try someone from a book : Pippi Lonstocking you could make a wig with a coathanger and red yarn, Little house on the prarrie with a nightgown type dress and an apron and bonnet. I made a spider costume with a black hooded sweatshirt and 3 pairs of stuffed black tights sewn on the back.Good Luck!

Have you asked her what she wants to be? Maybe you two can work on it together.
Last year my 7 year old went as the Grim Reaper (her idea). I think it gives them a chance to try on different identities. My meek child got to be scary. She loved it!

Black legging and a yellow shirt then sew on( or glue) Fuzzy black fur as stripes on the shirt
Get a hair band and use gold or yellow pipe cleaners to make antenna put a piec of the fuzzy blacks on the end.
Black shoes if she has them.
Then the PIRATE thing is in, sure you can figure that one out on your own.

I do not have any ideas, but I did want to share with you what my neighbor made her kid last year which I do not suggest. She put a black trash bag over his body and said he was a California Raisin! Completely embarrassing.
