I like your question. I've found that the average Christian doesn't realize that the word antichrist is not in the book of revelation at all. Though most of them believe that the bible predicts a single person who will rise up and lead the world against God's people, aka the Antichrist.

Technically, biblically, it's referring to anyone that goes against Jesus or his teachings. In reality, it was most likely a reference to Emperor Nero of Rome who was a monsterous persecutor of Christians.

(Interestingly enough, this persecution led to a more widespread acknowledgement and acceptence of Christians out of pure pity).

1 John 2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

1 John 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

1 John 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

2 John 1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

We are not to turn a deaf ear to that word, especially now that we are living in the end of times. We are to open our eyes to it and recoginze who they are and turn away from them. Ignoring them wont make them any less real .

2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

It's like the Waterboy's mom saying everythings "The Devil". Same mentality, I suppose.
