There is always a lot to do in downtown Toronto, and *not just at night*! If you live within walking distance of Yonge-Dundas Square and Nathan Phillips Square there are a lot of small festivals and markets that are happening all the time and are very interesting to check out.
There is great shopping along Queen St if you live South, and along Bloor St if you live North.
There is great nightlife concentrated in the Queen St area, but you can always find a bar open anywhere downtown and they normally have a good atmosphere.
You can see a sports event or a concert, or catch a play or orchestra performance.. or go to the Museum or Art Gallery.. There is just so much to do and it is all pretty concentrated. If you live anywhere near University Ave you can pretty much walk anywhere.. but if not the Yonge/University subway line can get you anywhere quick and cheap.
The cost of living is more expensive however. I know student housing averages around 500/month and that is a lot compared to nearby areas. And grocery stores also jack their prices - the good thing about that is with all the different cultures downtown comes many different small markets where you can get your food for cheap.
I wouldn't say Toronto is a dangerous place to live, despite what some people would have you believe. We have a gun problem right now, but a lot of it is gang related so if you keep your nose clean and stay out of the more run down neighbourhoods you're normally fine. There are a lot of homeless people though, and a lot of people who will be willing to take 10 bucks off you 'because they lost their wallet and need a bus ticket back home', but keep your eye out because you will see the same people over and over giving the same stories, and nobody wants to be a sucker.

its gonna be like any big city? (im not sure where you are coming from? like another city or suburbs or regular toronto or something). But its pretty good. I mean the condos usually have their own gyms, but if you live in an apt. there are gyms all around. There are clubs, museums, shopping, and sports, everything you need. The subway is very conveinent downtown too! The veiws from high towers are amazing. You can get a great view of the lake which makes you feel more like in a costal city.
It will probably be fairly busy in terms of people traffic. Everyone's walking around. The population of the downtown during work hours is probably several million (including ppl working in buildings). There are beaches and sand for the summer, and there is skating in the winter.
Driving around and parking is pretty expensive. Street parking is proably the cheapest, as lot parking is like $20-30 CAN/day. Also with so many people it takes some getting used to when driving around. But its easier I think than New York (imo).
Living space, you will prob find apts and condos around the 550sqft-900sqft most common. For renting you could expect to pay between $1300-2000 a month in a decent place. You could always live in student housing or something from UofT which is also convenient.
Overall, it should be fun, entertaining, and yet quiet when you need it to be. Never boring :)

Downtown Toronto covers a great deal of area! A little more specific would help; however, I lived north of College Street, South of Bloor, West of Church Street, East of Yonge.
I found it exciting ALL the time. More so at nite, as I enjoy the nite-life. There's always something to do, and even if you miss it, there's always something around the corner to do.
My only caution though, is be careful of the evil creatures that lurk at nite. Someone may befriend you, only to take advantage of you and leave you without a second thought.
You should really enjoy it though.
Cheers

Probably expensive because of the housing prices, and busy since it is the largest city in Canada. I would think there would be always a way to get around downtown toronto through bus or subway.
It depends where you live I guess...but I would think the houses are small also.

My daughter lives in West Bloor Village and she or he walks at night and feels particularly secure. Use worry-loose experience and you're able to have not got any issues. universal Toronto is an fairly secure city, yet like cities everywhere there are areas that are much less secure than others. areas of Jane highway are reported to be risky. suited of success.
