My Mom had it two years ago, and it was combined with a triple bi-pass. Thankfully, other than the blockages, she was in good health at the time, and the surgeries went quite well. Her recovery was good too, and now she has to be checked every 6 months to make certain her other carotid artery is not blocking, and that no other blockages are forming.
During and after the surgery, she was on life support, but within an hour or two after the surgery, she was back breathing on her own.
