I already have a one year old Irish Setter ***** who i love to bits.

Myself and my husband are now seriously considering getting another so that Lucy can have a 'play-mate'.

Do you think that this is right?

We do not have children and live in a three bedroomed house with a large garden so I would consider that we have enough room.

Is it ideal to have a 'play-mate' who will also be loved just as much as Lucy is or should we just leave her as she is?

Serious question so serious answers only please.

To make it clear I am thinking of getting another b*tch and am definitely not thinking of breading my current dog.

As one person asked, I do walk Lucy for about an hour each day.

I think it's a great idea to get Lucy a playmate, especially since it is apparent that you have a lot of love to share with another dog.

Just remember that Lucy is the first and will be the dominant dog, so give her the respect that she deserves by always feeding her first. This will allow the new pup to recognize her position in the family.

Dogs are, by nature, pack animals and they love to have other dogs around them.

You'd be more likely to have problems getting another female. I'd consider a neutered male. Two females are more likely to have an argument over hierarchy. Lucy will dominate a neutered male.
Most good rescue centers would let you take Lucy to meet any prospective dog. Take them for a walk together on neutral territory and see how they get along.

I would take a close look at how Lucy interacts with other dogs. Does she get excited for doggy "playdates" or does she sulk and get jealous or irritable?

We always thought we would adopt 2 dogs to keep each other company. However, now that we have Scout, I think she is an only-dog kinda girl. She does enjoy the company of other dogs, but she hassles them endlessly and I think it is because she is territorial and wants to show that this is her stuff, her toys, her house, etc. So we will let her be.

If your dog is well socialized and gets along well with others, I don't see why you should not get her a companion, as long as you are up to the extra work. She will probably enjoy the company. There will be an adjustment time, though. She will have to get use to another dog "sharing" her space, toys, and people! A neutered male is usually the best companion for a female, but if your dog is really good with others a female may work.

If your end goal is to have puppies, though, that is a different subject, with alot of things to consider!

no person can advise you because of the fact it somewhat is this way of very own decision. you're able to desire to bypass with what feels top to you. A canine is a residing being it is going to be including your loved ones for many, some years and you % the only this is in basic terms top on your loved ones's existence-type. people can only advise you on what they, individually might do and that isn't help you. in case you like a mutt, you're able to desire to get one with a great temperament and overlook some watchdog - deploy an alarm gadget, it's going to do the same job. A watchdog is barely a canine who barks and makes noise. in case you like a purebred from a superb breeder, there is not any might desire to experience responsible. you're no longer in charge for each and all of the canines in shelters. That concern is with the help of all of the outdoor breeders and domestic dog turbines and those people who purchase a canine yet can not be afflicted education and exercising it, so they do the elementary element and unload it. think of stressful approximately what you certainly need from a canine, then get what your coronary heart tells you is powerful.

Play mates are a great-just be careful about having 2 females. Sometimes, two girls don't get along as well as 2 males or a boy and a girl. Both dogs should be neurtered.

Having two dogs is helpful for them-they are pack animals :-)

If Lucy is a well socialized, stable, friendly dog, she would probably love to have a companion. Besides, people who love their dogs to bits, walk them and have enough room for them are the type of people who should have dogs!! Go for it and get her a friend!

I think it would be wonderful for you to get Lucy a playmate!! Dogs have feelings just like we do. They have doggie day care so they won't be alone! I think Lucy will love you even more for it! Just try not to give the puppy more attention than Lucy so she won't get jealous. Best of luck and have fun with your (kids)!

Are you considering breeding her or just a pal to hang with? Play mates are great for dogs - most love having companions to run and play with
