For those who want a rational and non-religious answer to your question - pork in the past has been a disease laden animal, made worse by feeding it garbage. The restriction against pork could have started as a health measure after observing that more people got sick after eating pork.

Apparently if they touch pork or pig they can never enter paradise and they won't get the free virgins :-). Jews on the other hand are only forbidden to eat it. So Israel's answer is to make use of my new invention - the pork chop gun. I heard of somebody who went to the mosque in Jerusalem with lard (pig fat) all over his hands and he then rubbed them over all the handrails, walls, door handles etc. I haven't heard of any muslims not making it to paradise (or getting there either it has to be said) so maybe it didn't make any difference.

Superstitions arise to explain things that happen in our lives. Pork used to be dangerous to eat 'cause if you didn't cook it well enough you could get sick or die from Tricnyosis (i'm not spelling that right...).
anyway, with modern biology we know the real reason for pork being dangerous. and with modern cooking techniques we can be very certain that the pork is cooked right.

It's becuase pigs are dirty animal that enjoy rolling around in their own filth. Pork meat is among the lowest nutritional meat. It has the highest fat etc.

Also... In general people usually eat meat from animal which are herbivores (that eat only vegetation).... cows, sheep etc. People dont' generally eat meat from carnivourous animals (cats and dogs).

Pigs are also a cannibalistic animal. They will happily eat pork.

You are what you eat ;-)

Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah; that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression, Allah is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
