Many people say that a dog will protect it's master just by pure instinct. Well, if this is true, why is it that my dog (husky/chow/pit mix) just stood there doing nothing when my friend was getting her @$$ beat? We were walking my 2 dogs, minding our own business. She was walking my husky mix and I was walking a black lab I had recently adopted from my friend's family.... Neither one of the dogs was even slightly interested in protecting anyone. What had happened was a biotch from my friend's school came and messed with us. She pulled my friend to the ground by her hair and hit her in the face repeatedly.... My friend had let go of my husky mix and he just stood there and looked around. The lab was pulling a bit on the lead, but only from all the excitement. She wasn't about to attack anyone... I mean, it /was/ my friend, and not me being attacked, but still... And le tme just say that this dog knows I'm the alpha and I've brought him up very well. So, what happened? .....

Yeah... maaaaybe... My last dog I had protected me. He was a chow/pit mix and one time we were out on the street talking with friends and my cousin was running from a little boy holding a dead snake, and she grabbed onto my shoulder and whipped around and behind me, and it took me by surprise SO much, like I wasn't even expecting it at ALL, that Strider jumped up and tried to bite her. Luckily he missed... o_O

The reason being is because it was your friend. Your dog as the natural instinct to protect you. If you were in danger I can tell you for sure that your dog would protect you. Try having your firend start yelling at you just for play and you act afriad and scared and let your dog know that you need his help. Trust me he will help you.

IF YOU had been assaulted, (thank goodness you weren't), YOUR dog probably would have reacted differently. YOUR dog has no loyalty or sense of protection toward your friend. A dog attack by the way is not a pretty sight. I would not want to do a "trial run" for laughs. Not that I think you would, but it's a side note I'm throwing in just in case someone else is thinking about it.
You haven't gone wrong in training or anything, it's just that your dog did not recognize your friend as his responsibility.
BTW: I am in no way advocating any sort of dog aggression, I am simply telling it like it is.

I have 2 german shepherd males ages 4&2.The 4 yr.old weighs 105# and there's no doubt in my mind that if I was threatened he'd take care of buisness leash or no leash and there'd be no stopping him altho he's a very well mannered, evan tempered dog. He'll take alot of crap from people or other animals before he's had enough.
The 2 yr.old would undoubtedly slip his collar and run as far and as fast from a confrontation as he could get while looking over his shoulder as if to say "Sorry mom, you're on your own."
Lucky for me I bite harder than either one of them.
The desire to protect what's theirs or other pack members is just stronger in some dogs than others. Also,a dogs age has alot to do with it and how strongly he's bonded with the one needing his protection.
Neither of my dogs were taught to attack.Nor will they ever be.I don't believe in hiding behind an animal for protection when I'm in a jam.But it's a comfort to know at least one has my back if it's ever needed.

If you would have gotten involved you probably would have got a different response from the dog. Even my Golden Retriever would bark at family(pack) members during an argument, raised voices, or wrestling for play(rough housing).

Not all dogs have the ability to attack someone if they are in trouble. A dog that looks after itself when attack by another dog would have the ability to spot trouble if you were attacked.

It was just as you said....it was not the dogs master and alpha...it was just someone to the dog....i would bet that if it was you the dog would have reacted differently....My dogs for example wouldn't do anything if you were being attacked but if it was one of my family member....aka...the dogs pack....he would react.

My australian sheperd certaiinly would.I was walking him when some strange man started a conversation with me about random things, and had a cheesy smile.I guess my dog sensed that I was tense and bit the man.
