Have u considered looking at car auctions? If u look up car auctions in a search engine it may give u some sites, some cars are old and go at reasonably good prices.

Big hitters for old beetles-most important 1. Floor pan-Rust around the battery area is acceptable, but no other place 2. Rust around the air intake in the back area is unacceptable 3. Check to make sure the car has never been hit in the front, they're hard to make like new if they have. 4. Seats go, make sure they have covers on them and are good shape 5. Gaskets around the windows 6. What are the condition of the brakes and master cylinder 7. Wiring is always a big hassle in the vw. The list goes on. You can always the engine out, like in 20 minutes, repair it and put back the body is the most important part.

good luck. old beetles in decent shape are very hard to find. but i would look in the newspaper. unless it's been restored you're never going to pay an exorbitant amount for old vw of any kind. many people advertise in the local paper or free local auto classifieds. when i was looking for an old kharman ghia that's where i had the most success.
you also might want to consider an auto broker. they're like a real estate agent but they find cars instead of houses. my parents bought a couple cars that way and had good success.

Where are you buying. We have a 1969 VW Beetle we are trying to get rid of in Atlanta. Needs a tune-up and some brake work. $1300.

my boyfriend got his 74 vw from ebay. you also could look at craigslist for any local holdings. there's also a forum for vw's called the samba - www.thesamba.com - that has classifieds for vw bugs.
