Parades usually start about 10 days before Mardi Gras and run right up to Mardi Gras Day itself.
In 2007, that'll be February 10-20.
The smaller krewes parade earlier, and Rex and Zulu parade on Mardi Gras Day. If you go February 16-21 or thereabout, you'll catch the best parades and the biggest crowds.
I think I read that Mardi Gras 2006 drew about 300,000 people, which is well below the typical average of about 1.5 million.
During most major festivals, hotel prices tend to start at $160 per night. Price is affected more by the hotel location than the type of hotel. If you want to be close to or in the French Quarter and/or along the parade route, you'll easily be paying $200+ a night. If you're willing to stay further from the action, you can find something much cheaper.

Mardi Gras hotels get scooped up quickly and can be quite expensive. If price is an issue, try getting a room in Kenner or Metairie, or even on the westbank-Gretna or Harvey. You can always get a cab to and from where you're going. Traffic tends to be crazy due to road closures for parades. And parking can be difficult to find, or really expensive once you find it! Mardi Gras day is February 20, 2007. If you stayed maybe Thursday through Wednesday, you'd catch all the major krewes and parades, as well as a lot of partying.

Mardi Gras is on February 20 this 3 hundred and sixty 5 days, however the season has already all started. i don't comprehend that many bars with something different than Mardi Gras music for the period of Mardi Gras. yet once you wanna see what this is all approximately, look at Tipitina's Uptown or the Maple Leaf for the real deal. have exciting!!

The Inn on Bourbon (owned by Ramada, I believe) and the Hotel Monteleone are both great places to stay. You can try either of these sites-usually you can get a good discount booking online:
