My dog has a heart murmmer and I want to get him nuetered. I want to know if anyone has had a pet with a heart murmmer and still went under Anestiesa (got their animal knocked out and got spay or nuetered.)

I am scared to put him under Anestiesa because I don't want him to die while he is under Anestiesa, because he has a heart murmmer. So he is one and a half years old and I haven't got him nuetered. He is a mini dachshund.

Can some serious people let me know if they still put their animal under Anestiesa if their pet had a heart murmmer and came out ok. Please Help.!!!

I don't have the money to see how bad his murmmer is. My vet says do it, but I want opinions from people that have done it. I want to know from anyone from experience. I am thinking about going to a different vet. I don't really like my vet.

The vet I go to is not real high tech or anything. My dad has been going there for years, but I do not want nothing to happen to my baby.

I only want answers from people who had went through a situation like this.

I know I need to go to a different vet. Even if I do I will still be cautious about my dog. I know vets know more than me.

But all I want to know from people if they had an animal with a heart murmer and still put them under Anestiesa.

Yes I have had many discussions with my Vet about this. That is why I am asking people from their experience.

I did have the ECG or EKG (which ever it is), but it and the vet didn't tell me much. The specialist who listened to the heartbeat over the phone said it was not urgent and did not need medication or anything right now. The other test to see excatly what the heart murmmer is, is like at least $250.00. I do not have that much money right now or in the near future. \

GitEmGang I have seen that you are harrasing people. I asked for people who have been through this situation. So would YOU grow up and quit harrasing people who are asking serious people. Obviously you do not care about animals and would risk thier life without even thinking about it.

Do not allow an old timer vet to do the surgery on your puppy, even though he probably has done spays and castrations thousands of times! Simple blood work procedures are not enough to predict how your puppy will do under the stress of surgery. Even low tech vets usually can do an EKG on a dog via the phone line.

A vet who specializes in Cardiology is the best person to determine if your dog is at risk during anesthesia and to preform a pre-op heart exam.

An ultrasound exam is the best way to determine the severity of a heart murmur. It will tell the vet how of the blood flow in the heart is being misdirected and also identifies readily where the defect is that is allowing the blood flow to produce a murmur.

I can tell that you love your puppy and want to provide the best care possible.....to allow an unexperienced vet to operate on a dog with a heart mumur without knowing the severity is a gamble.

Have you asked your vet about this? Depending on the degree of the murmur, they may be willing to go through with surgery. Knowing about it ahead of time will help them ensure he makes it through. There will be more risk associated with it because of the murmur. Make sure you do the recommended bloodwork before surgery so the vet knows if there are any other health concerns. You may want to consider going to a vet school or a hospital with a pet heart specialist to have this done....they'll have more experience with anesthesia for dogs with heart conditions. I'm glad you're planning to neuter him...I hope all goes well.

Vets can do a pre anesthesia test nowadays, just like for humans.

Ask your vet if they do these. A blood test is performed before anesthesia procedure, checking to see if your pet is able to sustain the anesthesia. If your vet does not perform this test then seek another vet till you are satisfied. I would not expect anything but he best for my pets in todays society.

If your vet is serious only they can satisfy all the questions and answers to reassurances you are after.

My dog has a heart murmur and I had her spay when she was 6 months old. She is now 8 years old and doing great. When you take him in tell the vet that you have been told that he has a heart murmur, and the vet can take extra precautions.

If you do not like or trust your vet it is a good idea to find someone who you can trust. I would not take one of my babies to someone I did not trust or like. Good luck

i guess it depends on how bad the murmur is...my cat had a 1 out of 6 when he got neutered, now he has a 3 out of 6 grade murmur. He ended up being fine, but it really depends on the animal. Ask your Vet.

He'll be fine. The vet wouldn't do it if he thought it was too risky. They usually give antibiotics to avoid infection after procedures when a murmur is present but they would do that with a surgery anyway.

So go to a different vet. If you don't like your vet, go find another one now, rather than stay with one you don't like and don't have a good relationship with.

Ask your vet these questions he will be able to answer better than anyone on here cause he actually knows your dog.

THINK here,OK?? Don't be a WUSS!

The surgery is MINOR!!! They don't even put em DEEP & it takes ***10*** minutes!!!
