Santa Claus and the tooth fairy are characters in tales for children, told by parents to justify certain rewards and behaviors. The Buddha and Mohammed are religious figures and have major cultural signifigance. The two pairs do not share a basis for comparison.

More of an emotional connection with the latter. Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy are childhood fantasies. They don't really have the emotional pull that the adult superstitions have.

The concept of gods has a greater emotional pull. It satisfies many human emotional insecurities like uncertainty about our future, bad things that happen to us, why we're here, where we come from and death.

There really is no more evidence for any god than there is for Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy. However, the former has much stronger emotion behind it, and that's enough for most people. When it comes down to it, people would rather feel good than accept the truth.

Because that is their religion! The tooth fairy and Santa Claus have some religion in them, sure. But Bhudda and Muhammed are actual gods. The same reason people beleive in the christian god all of their life

Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy are disproven by finding out that your parents deliver toys and take your teeth from under your pillow. Nobody replaces religious figures with real life figures to disprove their existence. Also, we learn from very young that we have to wait til we die to meet these people.

Because Buddha and Muhammed are real historical figures. Just like Jesus, they may not really have been Divine or anything, even if they were not, they still had some good and important things to teach.

Hey, don't go knocking the Buddha. Contrary to what most people belief, Buddha is not worshipped as a god and is in fact rather non-theistic in his teaching. Buddhism is properly a philosophy more than a religion.

I may be an atheist, and I may consider Jesus an insane little man, Muhammad a monster who swam in pork fat, the Lord and Lady to be twin hallucinations... but don't go knocking the Buddha. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
