I think it's just that they're practical... overalls are hard-wearing, easy to take on and off and turtlenecks are warm for the kids to wear.
It all boils down to the fact that they're just kids... no one should care WHAT they were (as long as it's appropriate and not provocative to paedophiles like some of the kids clothes these days)- they should just be allowed to be kids without worrying what they're wearing or how other people might interpret it...
Maybe you should grow up a little and stop fussing over what a bloody 5-yr old is wearing and find something better to do with your time? Just a suggestion...

I do like overalls but I don't like turtlenecks. However, all children are "cute" regardless of their clothing.
And how parents dress their children is really their business. If the parent is dressing their children like I do mine, then it is out of a deeper love than you can imagine. So, it's OK.
Maybe you are the geek dresser and are totally ignorant to that fact. And, your question definitely indicate 'your' loser status.
