I just got a cat about 3 weeks ago. We kept his name linus from the humane society but he doesn't respond at all to it. I get him to respond to kitty. Should we change his name or does he even care?

It's a definite YES! Our cat WILBY answers whenever he is called. He also does a good recall; which means if we call him from another part of the house he will come and show himself and he does a PAW (shake hand), HIGH FIVE and WAVE on command as well.

Normally the names given to the animals in humane society are just for the purpose of identification and records. The animal would not know.

To teach your cat to respond to his name (whatever your choice) or any other thing, you need to apply Positive Reinforcement. What this means is whenever the cat delivers what you ask, you give it a piece of his favourite treat. Repeat this every day with as many short (a few minutes) sessions as you have time.

Start by feeding a few small pieces of treats to the kitty. It's best to just drop it in front of the kitty since they are not very good at receiving food by hand. Once you have his attention call his name and treat when he looks at you. If need be you can bring the treat to you nose so the cat focus.

Happy training : )

I think yes. They at least learn the sounds of their names. I know that you are not suppose to name your pets anything that rhymes with "no," but my cat's name is Cinco and he knows his name for sure. He is a good little buddy.

As for your cat, I think Kitty is a good name as far as teaching it. Linus doesn't really seem very catchy for a cat, but you never know.

Oh yes they do learn their names, but you have to make sure you refer to him with his name every time, I got 3 cats and each of them is an individual and responds as one too. Just to make it a habit, even when you talk to your friends about it call him by his name, don't say my cat say his name and that will make it a habit. Good luck!!

Yes - I do think it is important for cats to have a name and they definitely do respond to them - though I think it is more the tone of the voice than the actual word.
They do get used to a new name, especially when they are young. I got my two kittens for a private owner who the children had named, silly names, so I chose my own names for them and they adjusted to this very quickly. Both my cats know when I'm calling their names, and will come to me, providing they are not doing anything better - such as watching birds!
I think you should give your kitten a new name - one that you are happy with and the cat will pick up on this. Perhaps, your kitten can sense that you are not happy with its name.
A new name will be a special bond between you and your kitten.

Hope this helps:>)

my cats name is Pops and he responds very well to that when I haven't seen him in a while I'll call for PAPPAS and he comes to that also I think if you repeat a name enough and spend time with the cat they will know their name. ANd oh yeah they don't really care what you call them as long as they are feed and loved.

My cats both know their names now; it took a few months. My first cat also knew his and would come running when you called him. One of my current cats will meow at you when you call him. It's pretty funny. It's weird, I think every cat responds to "kitty." My first cat did and both of my cats now do too. I'd say do whatever you want with his name and he may learn it over time.

Yes they do , repetition of their name and of certain sayings they do understand . My cat understands his name , and when I ask him to jump up on the couch I say 'ups" and he comes . They are smart and don't listen to others say differently. Keep repeting his name to him over and over and he will get to know the sound. The tone is also important , when I come home from eachnight he is at the door happy to see me , and I dothe same thing everytime I come home . I say whre's my baby , give mommy a kiss and he does. Again it is repetition, I do the same things in the same tone all the time . That is how they understand . They know it is a loving gesture .

I say either of my cats names they bounce down the steps.

Your cat is from the shelter he may have only had it 3 days and it may have been the next in the baby name book. When pets come in as often and quick as they do there is no time to "get to know them" to pick out good names. You get to know him pick out a name you want and he will catch on to it in time.

certain, cats can study their names. All my cats respond to their names, even with if i'm purely talking about them. they don't unavoidably come, yet they a minimum of seem at me. the thanks to prepare them is to call them through brand once you feed them or puppy them. They study very right now that their call means interest only for them. purely be careful - a cat will respond to even with call it hears really frequently. My cat Little bear became renamed Rat through my brother, and my cat Toulouse (like in Aristocats) in ordinary words responds to "hey, stupid!"

My cats learned their names-just keep repeating it when you talk and reward him with a kitty treat when you call him by his name and he responds.
