The boomerang used in sports comes back to the thrower. It has a curved surface on one side and a flat surface on the other. As the boomerang flies, the air flows across the two sides with different speed. This difference in speed of air provides lift and allows the boomerang to fly. Now, it must be clear enough that the basic principle which govern the lift of the Boomrang is "Bernauli's Principle". As it flies, the boomerang spins, and this spinning motion helps the boomrang to complete the circle. (Gyroscopic Stability).......... Try balancing on a bicycle without rolling forward and you can easily understand the meaning of Gyroscopic Stability, the stability of spinning wheels. We have all spun a gyroscope or top, the spinning gives stability. The gyroscopic motion keeps rockets on course and bicycles upright. It is the same spinning motion that gives the boomerang stability in the air.

The motion won't be circular so much as elliptical.

The distance depends on a number of factors: weight of the boomerang, wind speed and direction, whether the boomerang is thrown with the wind, against it or across it and how hard it is thrown.

Note also that the original boomerang is a thrown weapon -- it was used to stun or kill small animals. In that form it wasn't intended to come back. The returning boomerang is a toy, not a hunting implement.

A boomerang is an Australian Aboriginal wooden implement used for various purposes. It comes in many shapes and sizes depending on its geographic/tribal origins and intended function. The most recognisable type is the returning boomerang which, when thrown correctly, travels in a curved path and returns to its point of origin. Other types of boomerang are of the non-returning sort, and indeed, some are not thrown at all but are used in hand-to-hand combat by Aboriginal people. Boomerangs can be variously used as hunting weapons, percussive musical instruments, battle clubs, fire-starters, decoys for hunting waterfowl, and as recreational playthings. The smallest boomerang may be less than 10 cm from tip-to-tip, and the largest over 2 metres in length. Tribal boomerangs may be incised and/or painted with designs meaningful to its maker. Most boomerangs seen today are of the tourist or competition sort, and are almost invariably of the returning type.

The long distance boomerang world record is 238 m, held by Manuel Schütz of Switzerland. The boomerang probably travelled more than 500 m before returning to its starting point!

Boomerang is a weapon used by African natives for hunting. The distance depends on various factors. Size, wind, Angle etc. By the way the motion is not circular, its more like elliptical or oval.
