Because most people need religion to fill a void in themselves. If you ask 9/10 people who are religious why they decided to be, they have no answer other than they were brought up that way or somesuch.
The irony is that religious people also look down upon people who claim to have seen the things they are supposed to believe. Case in point, there is a guy at work who is a "born again" christian, if you will. The difference being, unlike most people, this man honestly believes he has SEEN god and talked to him, multiple times, like I might talk to you. Now, you and I might think he's crazy, but honestly, I respect him and his religious beliefs 10x more than the average person. At least from his perspective, he has a VERY reasonable and sensible reason for believing. He has seen god. :)

Because their parents don't actually believe in Santa and eventually they spill the beans. Not so with God.
I never "grew into" God, or Santa Claus for that matter, so I'm probably not the best judge.

Because we have no evidence to believe in the continued existence of Santa Claus, and have much evidence against it.
However, we have every reason to believe in the existence of God; atheists have yet to come up with a single persuasive argument. They rarely even try; they just call names and ignore logic.

I don't know the full answer to your question, but people should discard childish fantasies, e.g. Santa Claus, God and Jesus as they mature. Perhaps that's part of it. All too many people never achieve the highest level of maturity of which men are capable, so they cling to some childish ideas. There is no scientific evidence for any god's existence. Someone who answered your question denies this, and that is mind-boggling. As usual, this person accuses anyone who disagrees with him of his own flaws to which he is blind. My sister insults me outrageously if I don't agree with her childish beliefs and accuses me of starting quarrels if I retaliate. The answerer is like Sis.

People "grow out" of belief in Santa Claus because they see evidence he doesn't exist. How many of us caught our parent(s) placing the gifts under the tree one year?
Those of us who believe in God and Jesus Christ see no evidence for Their non-existance; in fact, it is quite the opposite: by becoming more and more spiritually sensitive, we see evidence every day that confirms They exist.

I thuink part of the reason is that millions of people have stated that they have had a personal experience that, to them, has revealed God and Jesus are true. It's not a thing they can use to prove any thing to any one, but they themselves are convinced by this so-called revelation. I have heard the same from dozens, even hundreds personally. They say "I can't prove it, but I saw what I saw, and heard what I heard, and I know what I know."
Maybe they are all just nut cases. We can close our minds to their story. Or we can acknowledge that even if *I* did not have that experience, there still might be something...some truth...some super natural...that *I* can not prove, but is there anyway.

You cannot out grow God. St. Nick was a peron. Not the fly-by-reindeer story. But he was a good person who wanted to help out kids with toys. Thats where we get the fairy tale from. Jesus is real, and he made you. Repition is how you learn anything. You make kids learn about evolution in school, and it sticks in their heads, and you have to get that stuff out.

Lacking faith in Santa only hurts for a while.
Lacking faith in a god means death is more threatening.
Thats a bit more frightening.
Nobody gathers every week to agree that the sky is blue.
