Because salt is caustic and irritating to the ulcer (canker sore) just like if you were eating citrus fruit it would feel the same way. Best way I have found to get rid of those hurting things really FAST is to rinse your mouth out with hydrogen peroxide straight from the bottle. It won't hurt and don't swallow any and it doesn't taste great but the ulcer(s) will be gone in a few hours with just maybe two mouthwash/rinses.. I know because I used to get them all the time and that worked miracles for me.Good luck!

Not sure, but I also find chocolate really hurts the mouth ulcers I get.

Try tablets called Corlan tablets. You let them dissolve on the ulcer and it tends to clear it up in about 24 hours, rather than the normal week-long healing time.

Salt tries to clean the sore... that is why sometimes it is good to gargle on salty water (YES WATER) as it cleans the mouth.

If you mix warm water and salt, and gargle with it- your sores will feel better.
