I'm not sure if it's really a "must see" place for someone from out of town and here for only 2 weeks to squeeze into their schedule to see, but I think the Griffith Ovservatory is a great place; not that big, but it's nice. If you go during the day, you can get a great view of the Hollywood sign from the side. If you go at night, you can look through tbe big telescope at stars. I saw Jupiter when I was there. I'm not sure if it's still going through rennovations or if it's complete, but I think it's a nice place.
But I guess the not-to-miss places would be Disneyland, Universal Studios/ City Walk, Mann's Chinese Theatre, Sea World, Knotts Berry Farm, and Medieval Times is a great family- dinner place, if your kids are into Knights and fighting and all, it's only down the street from Knotts.

Child friendly - what age? What do you enjoy. Here is a start of some ideas… Have plenty more if you can give me a bit more information.
Amusements Parks
Disneyland a definite for all ages, Knotts Berry Farm for those under 3 or over 6, Universal and Magic Mountain for older kids, Adventure City - 5 & under, Santa Monica Pier all ages, Legoland ages 3 - 9.
Griffith Park has Travel Town which has a bunch of trains the kids can explore as well as a little train that runs the perimeter. On Sundays, next to Travel Town is the LA Steamers - these are great fun to ride - kids must be 36".
In Santa Monica, the Pier is fun, there is a grand carousal at the end of it that you can ride as well. For older kids, rent bikes and head down towards Venice Beach. Also in Santa Monica, 3rd Street is fun to walk up and down, enjoy street performers, take a break in the kids section of B&N, there is a great toy shop and lots of places to eat. Also, on 4th street is an indoor playground called Bright Child. Great for a rainy day or really hot day.
If you have a car drive up to Zuma Beach in Malibu – a good beach to spend the day at.
In Long Beach, the Aquarium of the Pacific is wonderful. The Queen Mary is right there as well.
Museums
La Brea Tarpits are a hit with most children over the age of 6. They can see the bones of Woolley Mammoths and saber tooth tigers.
The California Science Center and Natural History Museum are both great and hands on as well.
Peterson Automotive Museum is great for the car lovers.
Getty Museum – my son & daughter both enjoy taking the tram up to the museum and walking around the gardens. They also like certain displays.
Downtown Los Angeles
Olvera Street – you can visit the first adobe in LA as well as one of the original firehouse, have lunch at Phillippes – home of the original French Dip and walk around Union Station.
Take in a movie at El Capitan Theatre
on a side note, famous Spruce Goose built by Howard Hughs was moved to Oregon and is no longer in Long Beach. There is anow a sumbarine that you can tour.
Also the Observatory has been closed for a while for major renovations. It is scheduled to reopen on the 29th of October, but only a limited number of tickets will be available for the first couple of months.

Don't spend too much time in Hollywood, there really isn't much there and a lot of it is on the grotty side.
The Watergrill is an EXCELLENT seafood restaurant - not sure how child-friendly it is, but i wouldn't not mention this restaurant to anyone heading out that way, the food is sublime.
We only did LA as a short stop on route elsewhere, but any other trip we have done to the States has been for at least 3 weeks and covered 3000 miles. If you have hired a car it is very easy to move around, you could easily only book the first nights accommodation and then book into hotels as you travel around.
On the route back, get to the airport in plenty of time, they have notoriously long queues to get through check in and security, no matter what ticket you hold.

I was there for a couple of days only . Santa Monica is a nice area and strolling along the beach of the pacific ocean is wonderful. During weekdays the beach was pretty empty but at the weekend , especially around Little Venice (?) it was packed but very friendly.

I used to live in RPV, near LA. There's a fantastic water theme park called "Wild Rivers" which is such a lot of fun -- for both kids and adults. Can't remember which City it's in, but it must be on the web. Also, you will often find that fast food outlets and supermarkets often offer discount coupons.
The other thing you must do, is visit a burger chain called "In & Out Burger". Simply the best burgers you will ever taste in your life. Only about 150 stores in this family owned chain, and they are only in California.
Have a great holiday!!
