I asked this question years ago in a store in a heavily Hispanic neighborhood in Brooklyn. The owner told me that the superheroes and spaceships help sell kids' mattresses, because many parents do not cover the beds with sheets. The kids just sleep directly on the mattress. Remember many low income people have to use laundromats. This can be quite costly washing sheets.

Because people would not buy them unless ALL manufacturers made them without patterns. When they take the sheets off to wash you don't want to look at an ugly mattress.
Same as why do people pay thousands of dollars for a coffin?
It is going in the ground to rot. And now they make some that are waterproof and insect resistant.

the patterns are simply to make the stitching more pleasant to look at. the stitching keeps the cover of your mattress firmly attached to the insides. personally, i like to not use sheets and wake up with pretty patterns all over my face and body - free tattooing! :)

To make them look for appealing at the store... your more prone to buy something that looks better... personally I just bought a plain white expensive mattress... but some think it could be more appealing :-)

Because it was sad and wanted a make-over. Why did the chicken cross the road?... these are the many wonders of the world. Unfortunately some have no answers.

It is a sort of 'default arrangement' by the manufacturer to cater to circumstances when by chance, it is not covered with a sheet.
