WHoa there. The US Merchant Marine and US Coast Guard are 2 different organizations. The US Merchant Marine service is non-military while the Coast Guard is part of the Department of Defense.
The requirements for joining are vastly different from what I have been told. They each have thier own Academies, although I do believe the coast guard academy is now Anapolis.
I do not believe that the US Merchant Marine Service are paid by the US government.
