Jack Johnson was the first since Marquess of Queensberry rules were adopted in the 1880's. He beat Tommy Burns in 1908. There was an earlier one when London Prize ring rules were used. The newer rules have men wear padded gloves, a round lasts three minutes, men rest one minute between rounds, and a man who fails to continue by a count of ten loses. The old rules had men using their "bare knuckles", a round lasted until someone was knocked down if it took all day, and a man who cannot return to "toe the mark" after being knocked down loses.
