Nasolacrimal duct may not be very well developed especially in premature kids - or, it may get blocked - even in term babies. Some of the signs and symptoms are absence of tears, and often a yellowish discharge out of the corner of the eye. It may affect one or both sides.
As a parent, what you need to know is that right now there isnt anything to worry about, it will probably resolve on its own as the baby grows. What you CAN and SHOULD do, however, is a gentle massage for the baby- massage the lower eyelid and cheek area with a gentle but firm downward stroking action, going from a little below the junction between the eye and nose down and outwards (diagonally) for about 2-3cm towards the ear. This usually helps. Do it about 10-15times, several times a day - eg-when feeding. It stimulates the lacrimal gland.

If it does not develop after a while, they will open it by putting a very thin tube in there and leaving it for a while. This will not alter the child's appearance in any way later in life. This is a minor corrective surgery, and if it is the only thing wrong with your otherwise wonderful child, be grateful. You are very lucky that you live in modern times, when there is such an easy and elegant solution to this little problem.
