we've been updating our new house..now i'm worried what all requires a permit. we've been replacing floors nothing like building or anything..just wanted make sure i wasnt doing anything wrong. and i do plan on finishing up my basement in the future so when does a permit come into being needed?

It depends on where you live. Usually it's determined by city, but there are places where it's a county issue. These days a lot of the regulations are posted online, especially if you live in a large city or metro area. I do know of cities where replacing floors requires a permit, so you should certainly check it out.

When finishing your basement you may find (depending on where you live) that you need to get multiple permits rather than just one. Make sure you cover EVERYTHING you plan to do, because you usually get a discount when you apply for multiple permits together rather than applying for each one separately.

if you make any structural changes, add a porch deck sunroom. add a bath, toilet plumbing. just call the town or county and they will tell you. safety items and new electric can be required.

City hall or a municipal bldg will let you know a) if you need one and b) where to get one if they don't have them - usually they have everything though.
