I see that some folks have given a lot of pointers already, so will add just a little more:
With regard to time of travel to China / Great Wall, I recommend late April and May or late September till early November.
Please avoid the first week of May -- there is a Golden Week (May 1st holiday - one week) and the first week of October (National Day - one week)
With regards to which sections of the Wall to see, my recommendation is to avoid the Badaling section -- it is overcrowded.
Mutianyu is a good choice and so is Simatai.
Simatai is a bit farther away -- about two and a half hours from Beijing but the drive is interesting -- you will be able to see both the countryside, some mountain regions and the Great Wall as well.
For Hotels, it depends on your budget. Staying in the city is definitely a better choice.
There are lower cost hotels (small ones) around Wangfujing (major shopping area near Tian An Men square), which is a location good for both visiting sites in Beijing as well as access to transport etc.
Enjoy your trip!

If you are travelling from the US, it would be most convenient to fly to Beijing and stay at a hotel within the city. It is easy to get to the Great Wall (rent a taxi, go with a guide, contact a tour agency, take a bus) and you can spend several hours walking around, taking awesome pictures.
There are two main sections of the Great Wall that are easily accessible from Beijing - Badaling and Mutianyu. I have been to both and they offer great views. Plus, they both have cable-cars (gondolas) that can take you to the top if you are less inclined to walk the whole way.
I prefer Mutianyu because it's usually less crowded, is in great condition, and has really cool watchtowers that you can enter to check out the sites from the very top. Here's some information from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutianyu
If you decide to fly with a Chinese carrier (Air China, for example), I would recommend that you go through a China based tour agency to book the flight, such as www.cytsusa.com or www.citsusa.com. They can arrange tours, but can also just book flights.
The spring and fall are the best times for visiting because the weather conditions are best. Just remember to avoid visiting the Great Wall (and other popular tourist sites) during any of the national holidays. The size of the crowds will blow your mind if you do!
As for hotels in Beijing, the Beijing Novotel Peace Hotel in Wangfujing is a good choice because it is close to many interesting places: the Forbidden City, Tian'anmen Square, the hutong area, shopping, restaurants, the subway system, etc.
Good luck with your trip.

if your going to a modernized component of China you will definately get a motel with a bathroom. certainly china is starting to be greater cutting-edge each and every day because of the fact the olympics are being held at Beijing in 2008. I stayed at a motel in China. It became into undemanding. It wasn't grimy or something. It became into prettty good! in case you bypass to ShangHai then you definately'll DEFINATELY come across a great advantageous motel there.
