Yes, all councils and water authorities do this. Where do you think the neverending supply comes from? It's treated and then fed in to reservoirs, then eventually comes out of your tap.

It is generally spoke of in London, that the exiting water from the houses goes into the River Thames and further up the Thames it is withdrawn and then recycled and goes back through the taps. It is a fact, that recycled tap water contains biological enzymes and oestrogen from the womens' pill. The recycling plant cannot destroy these, so people drink them. In London (fact) - some people get mouth ulcers and stomach pains from drinking tap water. Once living in London, a GP told me to boil the tapwater, cool it, & either put it in a bottle, or jug & keep in the fridge. Don't drink the water straight from the tap - he told me. If oestrogen is still in the drinking water, then men drink it as well . . . So your Australian friend was not "winding you up".

Indirectly- you have to look at the recycle chain - sewage is treated biologically and the resultant supernatant ( clean liquor ) is sterilised and returned to the water courses. The heavier sludge is disposed of elsewhere.
Water treatment plants are likely to use river water as well as water from reservoirs as their raw water source. There is more control on drinking water quality in UK than bottled drinking water. Cheers
