ok I had this same problem sort of. But well I used to live in NYC. When I was flying out of JFK, they asked me how old I was(which pissed me off really badly) but well I told them I was 16. The rules are if you are 11 or under, you must have a flight attendant help you and watch you on the plane. If you are 11 and over you can be on the plane yourself, without anybody bothering you, Of course you can always request that a flight attendant help you. But well I never had that so can't really say whether it was helpful or not.

So yeah doesn't matter what age you are, it just has certian conditions to how old you are and what you MUST have and what you CAN have.

Under the age of 5 the answer is no. Each airline has different rules. Delta for example will allow a child over the age of 6 to fly alone, you can pay a 75.00 one way fee which provide escourted service for the minor. making sure they get to the right gate and on the right plane. Be cautious of using this service, my son did it twice and on the way home he was misplaced at the Orlando airport and almost missed his flight home.

From American Airlines' FAQ:
Can children traveling with an adult or as an unaccompanied minor use Self-Service Check-In?
A: Yes -
Accompanied Children (children traveling with an adult) may use Self-Service Check-In as long as they possess a major credit card or AAdvantage elite status card (AAdvantage Executive Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum or AAdvantage Gold) in their names.
Unaccompanied Children (children traveling without an adult) may use Self-Service Check-In however, for security reasons, unaccompanied minors must see an agent at the ticket counter. An unaccompanied minor may use Self-Service Check-In as long as they possess a major credit card or AAdvantage elite status card (AAdvantage Executive Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum or AAdvantage Gold) in their names.
