it depends what you are going to use it for really?

if you are doing like a graphics course or something, you'll want a fairly decent spec laptop/pc to handle graphics applications etc.

if you are doing a course where all you'll need the laptop or pc for is word documents and applications which aren't resource hungry, then a cheapish low spec laptop would do.

If it was me and i only needed office really, and to be able to watch dvds and burn cds etc, then I would go for a lowish spec laptop as this would save desk room and i'd be able to have it anywhere in the room,

but if you are going to be using powerful applications like graphics and design problems, go for a good spec pc (core duo processor) if you can afford.

hope this helps!

Id personally go for a Laptop, if you want it to go with you then they are ideal, ive had mine a year now and it has been a great investment.... Its an Acer Aspire and it has everything i need 60gig harddrive, Fast as a bullit processer, DVD-CD player, Burner - Wi Fi and infrared, Great graphics too. It was 700quid when i first got it but i belive the prices have fallen a lot, Plus i belive you can get a Dell for around 300quid, It really depends what your going to do on it ?, be carefull of used computers though, you dont know what the hell they've been used for ??. Good Luck

Depends on what you're going to be using the computer for. A laptop is good in most cases because you can take it around with you and do work on it while not in your dorm/room/whatever. PC is good if you just plan on doing all your work there. And tends to be cheaper than a laptop.

If you plan on only doing word processing, etc on your computer, a bare bones system without all the bells and whistles will do. If you want to be able to use your computer for things like gaming (which is what most higher end computers are used for, not word processing :P ) then you shell out the bucks for something more
expensive with higher specs

Students definitely need a laptop. You can take it to college for those last minute essays, take it to a mates when swotting together etc. It is so much easier with a laptop.

You will just need a bog standard one. It doesn't need to be fancy as you will only be using it for word, excel & powerpoint probably.

You could always have more memory added later on if needs be.

I can't say what spec would suit you best as I don't know your needs, all I know is you need to avoid the Dell ones with the dodgy Sony batteries....boom!! lol

Go for an IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad (laptop). Make sure it's the latest and has at least a 2GHZ processor, 512MB RAM, DVD-ROM drive, wireless internet access, some USB2.0 ports, 40GB hard drive, and most of all, Windows XP Professional. At least this way you have a portable computer AND you can use it in all your classes.

OK in school you would be better off with Notebook if you want it to take to school.

64bit system only really neeed if you are pc freak like me or you need the power for advance software otherwise stick to normal stuff.
RAM if you play games 1 to 1.5 gb of RAM
Hard drive the all depends if you have a lot of music and movies I would go for around 150gb
speed of CPU go with what your money can buy, the more expensive the better.
