THIS IS NOT A GENEALOGICAL QUESTION!!

I don't think human nature is like that.
We give so much, every day, most of the time not expecting anything back. We give birth, pay attention, take care, offer love and understanding, give friendship, a shoulder to cry on for the others, we give answers, clues, we teach others what we know, and the list could go on for a long time.
So, I really don't think we are selfish. We are, sometimes, too absorbed by the material part of life, may be sometimes too tired or annoyed, but we are good people deep inside.
You just have to be prepared to discover the good side of our nature, that's all.

I think it goes deeper than human nature. Animals tend to be selfish so maybe we have acquired their instinct to survive. Maybe it's because we were thought this way by our parents from generation to generation because they couldn't find a way to survive without being selfish. Maybe it's because everyday we give so much and some time later we expect something in return and we take more than we give. Maybe in the past someone was selfish with us and we became the thing we hate because we wanted revenge. Maybe it's just conflict, stress in our minds. etc. etc. etc.
But lately more people have become a little less selfish, so maybe we finally managed to pass this problem.

I think so and I also believe it reaches far far back! I agree with anyone that said: survival of the fittest. I believe that the chase for the $$ has a lot to do with it. And one other thing to the person who thinks "animals are selfish" I disagree! Basic instincts and survival of fittest!!! All about the afternoon meal and a frontrow spot at the waterhole!

Hey Blonde D,

It is human nature 2 b selfish because you have to eat. Yes, it is that primal. Your stomach makes you selfish. Only by wisdom and maturity do you learn to share, respect, and love.

Note: The first web site below is from a Jewish foundation, I am not jewish, but they do offer insight. The others offer similar explainations.

Maybe it's just an attempt to protect ourselves from the others intrusion. Or it's simply our inner and deep wish of being recognized and assumed as unique persons. Some say that it's only ignorance and mean nature and a lack of respect for ouselves first.

I don't think it is 'human nature' to be selfish. We choose to be. There are many others around us that are not as such, always giving and not expecting the favours back.

Probably it's still from the early ages when it meant you have to be selfish (hunting animals and keep the meat for yourself) or you wouldn't have survived.

Because we live inside our own skins in our own consciousness and have a tendency to get caught up in our own problems and pain.

It takes a lot of work to think about other people.
