It's called food photography. They make the "model" food in "professional" kitchens using much higher quality ingredients so that it looks perfect and have pro photographers and videographers film it. There is even an entire branch of the photography industry dedicated to food. They do that to draw the crowds in.
But in order to fill the countless restaurants with workers, they aren't willing to train or pay anyone what a professional chef would be capable of. Alot of the workers are high school and college age kids who are often begrudging their time there so they don't care what it looks like.
Restaurants like Denny's, etc are usually more spot on when it comes to pictures vs the real thing and they have better quality than the fast food places.

Because in most if not all cases the pictures are taken with fake or simulated food. That burger was put together more carefully than a house of cards. The lettuce is pinned down, the cheese melted with a heat gun, and the pattie stained and painted with a gloss acrylic to promote greasy shine. Unless you would enjoy eating this, expect to never get the same thing.

If you continue to buy what you know you cannot get, it is your fault. It is because their advertising budget it massive. The photo shoots take hours and the food is sprayed with agents to cause it to look much better than they can ever produce in reality. You are right on about the portions, they always look like they could fill a fishing boat, instead of a bread plate.

thats because the glowing photos are only a marketing tool... they attract us to them.. create a mental image of the food the brain than depics the food to be such but when u actually get the food it is never the same. Usually those photos are studio shots under very bright lights and high resolution camers... so brother there is no point hoping to get the same thing as those photos.

Hook-line-sinker! To get you to buy it! Next time point to the picture and tell to make it like that. With the big chunky piece of tomatoe, the meat extending beyond the tomatoe and the buns/bread.
If they cannot duplicate it, demand a refund. Be sure to take it out at the counter and ask for manager to compare it with you on the picture! To be really arrogant ask that the sesame seeds be counted to exact amount to.
You are one smart consumer!
PS don't forget to ask for same colored pickels, lettuce. etc. And you like the exact same size as the picture. Cause thats what you are ordering for same price.
Watch out for Burger King. Them readerboard told me price for salad is $4.49, Cashregister computer charged me $4.59. Manager to cheapskate to refund the dime difference!

All photographs, from models to cars to food even have been 'touched', in the case of food, they brush a special shiny goo over it and that makes it look appetizing in the pics. As for models, their spots, even their armpit hairs are 'touched' and magic, clean spotless skin!!

the pictures are mere marketing crap! Marketing's meant to fool people into buying things. Speaking of pictures, beware of matchmaking pics too...the girl in the pic always turns out to be Richard Simmons material in reality.
