Acute pyelonephritis is the sudden development of a kidney infection. The infection and inflammation that it causes mainly affect the tissue within which the kidney's tiny filtering units, the glomeruli, are imbedded. The treatment for acute kidney infection is bed rest and a light, bland diet that includes extrea fluids, particulary large qauntities of water. Antibiotics generally bring the infection under control in 24 to 48 hours, although treatment continues for 14 days, or longer in some cases.

I have had lots of kidney problems. On a scale of 1 to 10 the pain has been as much as a 6 before. Any more pain than that and I had an infection along with a kidney stone(s). The pain with that was up to 10! Did the ER xray you for stones?
To deal with the pain of the infection, at times, lots of water and cranberry juice has helped, but if it is a stone, only pain medications will help!
Hope I have helped.
