An excellent fighter as a middleweight. If they go by the criteria that some of the fighters get elected to the hall of fame by then he should be a hall of famer. Great defensive fighter as a middleweight blocked punches with his shoulders and made it look easy.

Brad Morris is right on! Toney will go in boxing history as the guy who never met a food he didn't like. The older he grew so did his waist. He became Lazy a relied on lying on the ropes or stuck in the corner to hold up his out of shape body knowing his legs could never handle a twelve round fight. If he was to gradually build into a heavyweight, kinda like Roy Jones did then maybe but not the way he did it. He looks horrible at heavyweight his belly is flabby and he has two chins. Tucking his head and rolling with the punches has gotten him this far but his undeniable weight problem might be the end of him or truly his demise as a fighter.

He will still go down in the books as a great fighter. He is not a heavyweight and I think that's why he looks so fat and out of shape here. He should really be a Cruiserweight. I think he earned his place in the books when he beat Jirov before moving to heavyweight. Everything else is just bonus. Think about it he has fought nothing but champion and former champions since being at heavyweight and has lost none of them. He bullied Evander Hollyfield, clearly beat John Ruiz (before having it reversed) and had a draw with Hassim Rahman who knocked out the last undisputed long reigning champion. Now he's taking on a top rising star in Sam Peter. If he loses any of his next 5 fights I don't think it will be counted against him.

Not a particularly good era for boxing especially in the heavyweight division. Toney is a good fighter but hardly a legend. If he were fighting in the 70's he probably would not even be a top 10 contender. Toney has not exactly worked on his abs in training since he has been a heavyweight and relies on his boxing ability. He is very good against not so good competition at this time.

I like James Toney. In my book he was a legend as a middleweight, but will be overshadowed by his manager. After he got rid of her he didnt do much. I think he is still a good fighter and could be a force in the heavyweight division. As for the steroids. I was at the garden when he beat ruiz. He won that fight fare and square. He came in that fight out of shape. The steroids were due to the injury he had and was a perscription. They knew he took that before the fight started. So to me the steroids thing was just to screw him over. The roy jones beating hurt him though.

Lights out should be remembered as a legend if crazy Mike Tyson is going to be remembered as a legend for beating people like Leon Spinks and Francois Botha barely then James deserves some credit. Minus the whold steroids thing.

I think he will be remembered as a fine fighter. I just can't recall whether he won the light heavyweight title. the reason why I ask , is because its a shame he didn't win that particular title. Much like Roy Jones not winning the crusierweight title. it should have been a natural progression.

How can you not look at him as a legend?
A thirty seven year old former middleweight using old school skills to compete with heavyweight champions.
