You can...the oil in the avocado, especially when you wrap a warm, wet towel around your hair after applying will let the oil penetrate.
You can do the same thing with virtually any type of food oil, mayonnaise, castor/cod liver oil....but you'll need to either avoid the cat or shampoo well afterwards.

Ingredients:
1 avocado (peeled and mashed)
coconut milk
Directions:
Combine mashed avacodo with some coconut milk. Mash together until its smooth and about as thick as shampoo. Comb it through the hair and let sit for 10 -15 minutes, wash out.
