Sunlight. Even ice will sublimate. From solid form to gaseous-form. An individual molecule can escape through the energy given to it....and it that happens lots and lots of times...you get the picture.

There is wide distribution of the individual velocities (and the respective energies) in the Water molecules' population, called Maxwell Distribution. At any moment of Time, some molecules have kinetic energy higher than the average one (the last is related to the Temperature), so they could escape from the water phase and go into the air.
More Spreading leads only to less time needed to evaporate some amount (mass) of water.

when water is spread on surface it is subjected to a combined heat and mass transfer from the surruounding atmosphere. as the water vapour per kg of air present in the atmosphere is more than the the the water on the surface it readily absorbs the water on the surface. as rich solution has affinity for weak solution

its because of the fact that there is less water in the air surrounding it( due to this you see wet surfaces lie the same for long hours before they evaporate in rainy season),
latent heat of vapourisation is also a reason for that
