Geh, don't listen to people who will say that we're closer to the sun during summer, I swear, why do so many people know so little about astronomy and science in general...

The reason it's hotter in summer is because the sun's rays strike the earth more directly in summer. In winter they're coming in at more of an angle. Also, during summer, the days are longer due to the earth's tilt. The time around longest day of the year isn't usually the hottest because it takes the air and ground a while to heat up and cool down. In the tropics (between the tropic of cancer and tropic of capricorn, near the equator), they don't really have winter and summer because the sun's rays are always striking the ground at about the same angle. Above the artic cirlce and below the antarctic circle, they have at least one 24 hour day and one 24 hour night, due to the tilt of the earth.

In the southern hemisphere, winter months are june, july, and august, because the southern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun when the northen hemisphere is tilted towards the sun. Read these sites for more info, and pictures...

Distance of parts of the earth from the sun. That's why different parts of the world have their winters at different extents and times. Cocoa is "sold" during the winter :)

cause the sun is closest to the earth during summer and goes futher away during winter.. since the earth is titled at an angle only the places lying in the nothern hemispehere get winter in december jan and summer in marchh april etc.. the same is reversed in the southern hemisphere.

because of the tilt of earth's axis, and how that relates to the amount of heat we are receiving from the sun.
