check your running shoes, buy a good pair of asics - try hitting the ground heal first, it may take you some time to get used to if you strike the ground flat or on the ball of you foot but it will make a big difference

Shin splints are nasty. Rest for a while and let them recover. Run only on soft ground, like grass, and avoid hard surfaces like roads or pavements.

A good pair of cushioned trainers might help as well.

Try going cycling instead, you might get a sore backside but you will get less problems with muscle injury.

Also you could try losing some weight, as shin splints are common amongst people with too much weight running on hard surfaces. (I believe the previous poster may be correct about over pronation. However, unless you rest, run on soft surfaces, and lose some weight first, new trainers will not solve the problem; I know this from experience)

Sore shins are slightly worrying, I run about 3 marathons a year and make sure i stretch everything realy carefully and i like running in the warm rathr than the cold, It may be that you have ove done it and have created 'shin splints' - type into google, in which case stop running now!

Check that you're wearing the correct shoes. When running on hard surfaces, long-term damage can be caused if incorrect footwear is worn. Also, you could try taking a calcium + vit D supplement which helps strengthen the bones, although if you're eating enough dairy products, ie, yoghurt, cheese, etc and drinking enough milk, this shouldn't really be necessary. Also, make sure that you do warm-up exercises before you start each run.

The pain in your shins sound like shin splints which is caused by your feet overpronating (rolling) when you run.
Go to a speacialst running shop who will analyse your running style and advise you on the correct running shoes to suit you.

I guess you are having shin splints.

3 things to do:

1 Rest until you recover cause it can only get worse if you continue
2 Make sure you are wearing running shoes that are appropriate for your purpose (running) and feet.
3 make sure the route you take does not cause unnecessary impact; avoid cement pavements, try running on a track for a while.

Another solution would be to pick up cycling instead of running, great exercise, minimum cost, minimum impact injuries.
