Zakzoot had it right! They are a lifetime commitment, but the best ones depend on your situation. I LOVE Ekkies(Eclectus) the only problem is I have several birds already, and they are a very calm sirene bird, and if they are in a stressful situation, instead of alarming and being loud like maybe a Too, they will just clam up and be quiet, and sometimes pluck themselves bald! If you think it would be an only bird then it might work, but thats just one example. The best thing to do is look at your situation, whether your in a house, apartment, etc. do you want a loud bird or a quiet one? A big one that requires a 5 foot by 4 foot cage, or a small one? Write down a list of what you want and what is ideal for you, then start researching, and the one that you can devote the most of your free time to and that fits everything else is the best option. For instance, I have 2 lovebirds, and a Sun Conure. My sun is VERY demanding on time, so he is always on or around me when I'm doing chores around the house. Now my lovies I take them out and play with them for about an hour or more throughout the day, but they also spend a lot of time playing with themselves on their stand. If you only have an hour a day to devote SOLELY to your bird, I would suggest something small. If you work from home etc. and have several hours, then you could get something bigger, I wouldn't however suggest getting something as big as a Macaw for a first bird though! Good luck!

Due to a death in the family, I became the proud owner of a 15 yr old Amazon parrot. I think we bonded well at first, but this is now 4 months down the road and I cant believe how attached to the bird i have become. He talks and understands, I talk to him as he was a young child, now all he wants to do is sit on my shoulder and go all over the house with me. He's not nuts about my husband or son, but they seem to accept one another. parrots have the mentalilty of a 3 or 4 yr old, men cant seem to accept this. I never leave the house without telling him I'll be back in just a short.....he tells me bye.........and Hi when i come home...... this is my first bird, there wonderful pets, but alot of work . they demand attention, if your not home alot i wouldnt consider a parrot, good luck.....

Before anything ... you need to ask yourself if your ready to have a pet that might possibly out live you. That needs constant attention and companionship. Bird birds bond with their owners and are prone to depression, psychosis, sickness and death if neglected. On the other hand ... if your commited to the bird you will get everlasting affection, amusement, loyalty and of course the bigger the bird ... the bigger the mess.

I say the above as too many people get interested in exotics and are then put off by the amount of care , attention and expense that goes with them. Don't forget to include your signifigant other if one is around when making the choice. Baby birds need to be socialized to all those around them and more too get comfortable around people. Its not unual for birds to bond to only one owner and get highly jealous and act out when their owners are getting attention from others. ( just something to think about :) )

Which bird you want will depend on a variety of things, size, color, personality, ability to talk ( talking is great but know you have to hear it the rest of your life )

Parakeets, Cockitails are good starter birds ...

then Quakers, Conures, eclyectus, small amazons...

then Greys, amazons ( red headed, lilac crown, blue front ) small cockatoos ...

then Larger amazons ( double yellow ) Macaws ( Blue and gold, Green wing, Scarlet ) Cockatoos ( very hihg maintaince ) Mollucan, Sulfer crested, umbrella

As the birds get bigger the more work and attention hogs they are. Read lots of books and sites on the parrot of your choice and make sure its a committment you reallt want to make ... birds can be amazing pets BUT they can also be far more demanding than people expect prior to owning them. btw..make sure whatever breed you choose screeens you/his buyers to make sure the birds go to good homes. It usually indicates they take good care of their birds and they are healthy and happy.

Good luck with whatever bird you choose ... they are great pets!

It depends on how much time you can afford to spend with your bird for training, care and company. It depends on how much space you have in your residence, and it depends on your lifestyle. This decision also involves how much of a commitment you are willing to give to learn a LOT of new stuff: training techniques, diet, basic bird husbandry ( care of birds) and safety. There is a lot to read up on, learn, and you have to keep up with the ever-increasing overall industry knowledge. Some people can handle a larger bird with no problem. Others might have issues with a smaller, yet more demanding species. It all depends on your personality and ability to care for them.

Well it depends. Do you want it to talk a lot because African Greys are the best at that. Cunjurs are cool to but dont talk as much . Aslo for a big bird that lives long and is beautiful you should go with a macaw or scarlet

actualy it depends, African greys are known to be the most poular but are uslay not the best pets , they are uslay one person birds and can become grouchy, it all depends on how many people will be handling it, how busy the house is and some more stuff.

There isn't a best for everyone. People want different things in their bird.it's what's best for each person and their home and lifestyle. I prefer eclectus parrots. But I also have an african grey and several cockatiels.

The African Grey for sure and the Conure as well. If you want to go larger then it's the Macaw.
