Here is something you need to understand: you TRAIN your body to want more and more food. Fat people do not become fat overnight. It's a learned behavior that becomes a habit. What is learned can be unlearned. They key is persistence. You can't watch what you eat for one day and eat whatever you like for the next three. And it can be done - people do it all the time. Been there done that...
It is what you eat, but it's also portion size and how often you eat. Get yourself moving in any way possible even if it's only waving your hands around.
Rice cakes, fruit, raw vegetables - I'm sure you know what you should be eating. Another trick is to take your mind off from food by doing something that requires your total attention. I've noticed many obese people are actually very smart so challenge yourself with a mental task that's difficult for you. Learn a new language. Make yourself understand the theory of relativity. Read all of Shakespeare's plays or read "War and Peace". Learn to oil paint. Do something instead of feeling sorry for yourself and using that as an excuse to eat more.
It might not be easy. Overcoming addictions usually isn't a walk in the park. But it can be done.
All my best to you.

I consume cooked egg whites with low-calorie salsa and fat-free sour cream. I also eat watermelon, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries to keep the sugar cravings down.
For dinner, I will often have black beans, cilantro, lime juice, salsa, and fat-free sour cream (have a whole can and it's still less than 400 calories). Kashi Go Lean Crunch whole grain cereal is high on fiber, tasty, and has protein. Kashi also makes meal replacement or protein bars that come as low as a 120 calories. I will sometimes have these bars instead of a regular snack. General Mills makes Fiber One Bran Cereal which has 60 calories per serving and 14 grams of dietary fiber, of which 13 grams are insoluble. So this cereal is extremely filling, tasty, and not even really 60 calories because your body expels the food relatively quickly.
Sashimi is very low calorie and I will now eat just a third of the bowl of rice.
Egg white omelettes with mushrooms, chopped red/green peppers, tomatoes, and salsa are very good. You can wrap up the omelettes in a whole grain tortilla shell and make a burrito. Trader Joe's makes good low-fat granola. I've found fat-free yogurt that are 60 calories each. Whole wheat pasta and low-calorie spaghetti sauce works. At the Cheesecake Factory, try the Firecracker Salmon Rolls or the Ahi Tuna. I also will cook a large amount of spinach and put soy sauce over it. There is canned crab meat called Culinary Reserve that is 200 calories for the whole pound. If you must have chips, try SunChips because they are whole grain, but get them in the small containers otherwise you can eat the whole large bag, which I have done.
Basically, slowly eliminate food items from your diet. Earlier this year, I threw out the white rice. Then I incorporated more green vegetables in my diet. Then I stopped eating the 1100 calorie- poblano pesto chicken burrito at Qdoba and started making my black bean dish. With each month, you will get stronger and more committed. Don't try to eliminate everything at once, but do it one at a time. The whole process may take you months or years, but eventually you will incorporate a mostly healthy diet. I still occasionally eat bad foods, but I am better able to bounce back now that I have the eating habits in place.
Trader Joe's makes great low-calorie sandwiches. There is a 440 calorie roast beef sandwich. Also a 410 calorie turkey sandwich on ciabatta with pesto sauce. The company makes a very satisfying 250 calorie Cobb salad (170 calories if you skip the dressing).
I hope this helps.

First - Dieting and discipline is not the answer. And doesn't address the question anyways, so ignore that advice.
Second - You risk getting a lot of unqualified answers posting you question here. Although a few of the responses give good advice, you should be wary of some of the answers.
Third - Vegetables and fruits are always good, but in the end, too many calories is too many calories and you WILL gain weight overeating any food.
Fourth - I recommend reading "When Food Is Love" by Geneen Roth. It is an easy read and she explains how overeating is a symptom and not a problem. Very informative.
And last - I trained a woman who started at 330 lbs (she started 18 months ago). Last night she weighed in at 205. She looks and feels great, and she claimed that this book was what got her started. I was curious and I read it to. I recommend it highly.

Learn some self control. Exercise. I have been exercising and losing weight. When you feel better about yourself and keep losing, you don't want to overeat. Eat a large salad w/lunch and dinner, drink water w/your meals, and put your fork down between bites. When you're hungry at night, try raw veggies and fat free calorie free dressing. But be careful because it still has sodium. Drink LOTS of water. Make sure you eat breakfast! Very important. Have a slice of whole grain toast (not white), fat free light yogurt or an 8 oz. glass of skim milk, a piece of fruit or a half cup of orange, cranberry, or grapefruit juice, and a protein such as egg whites or even nuts. Have a sensible lunch w/a large salad and a sensible dinner w/a large salad. For dessert, a small amount of popcorn or veggies and dip. Above all, exercise! Even if you can only do 5 min. 5 times a day. Get your heart beat up. Good luck!

People as a whole are too acidic. When young, we can purge out the acid well. As we grow older, our kidney and lever cannot handle the acid.
Our body balance the acid level by archiving the acid into fats. That's why no matter how much you eat, you remain the same size.
Many diets do not work for most people because you starved yourself and ended up craving for more food. Most diets also make you tired. Starving burn more lean muscle than fats.
I try other diets. The only one that works is the acid-alkaline diets. I read it from the book "pH Miracle" by Dr Young. Taking alkaline food instead of starving myself works. I lost 2 kg while my sister lost 5 kg over 1 month. I am more energetic because according to the book, my blood cells are in better shape to carry oxygen.
If you want to try, I suggest drinking alkaline water. Just add 2g of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to 1 liter of water. You will feel more energetic. If you have diabetics, you will see your sugar level drop, according to one friend of mine. Once convince, you can then try their super-greens.
Being too acid is the cause of many diseases according to the book. I cured my 7-year foot fungus problem without applying anything. I am surprised.
The best to your health.

it's a matter of engaging in self discipline doglas.
your constant hunger for eating will not be resolved by taking in foods that will not make you fat.
You will need all the minerals, vitamins and proteins that you can get so that you will survive. It's overeating that causes your obesity. And it's your overeating that needs to be addressed, not your eating pangs.
Everything could be psychological too. You already mentioned compulsive needs, that means you already have some sort of pre-meditated thought towards eating, rather than having a pre-meditated thought towards exercise.
You will only jeopardize your health if you don't put yourself in a good exercise regimen. Don't add up to the already exploding figures of obese people in the world.

EXERCISE. Is the answer.
And there are plenty of foods that are healthy but not disgusting.
Steer away from GREASY and FATTY foods.
And sugar.
Once you lose substantial weight, you can eat a bit of those things but not a lot, mind you...
Eat a balanced diet. But don't SKIP MEALS. It's not good....
If you're hungry, instead of grabbing some fatty thing, grab an apple, an orange etc; It is naturally sweet and super yummy. =)

You need to get down to the reasons why you eat too much in the first place.
If you eat negative calorie foods that should help, apples and celery are examples of this.
Good luck.
