If you are making a steel die for aluminum believe that you will need tool steel maybe like a H-13 type steel or something like that. Once you make the mold it can be heat treated and or nitrided to harden the surface making it more resistant to wear. There are also coatings that may or may not be applicable but I am not sure if they would would in your situation.

If you are making an aluminum mold, this can be treated by a process called hard anodizing. This process creates a layer of aluminum oxide that is quite thick and hard. This increases the life of an aluminum mold.

Baudeagle is correct. The process used on Aluminum dies is called Nitration.
