Both are correct, one is in English the other is in German. America in the English language and in German it's Amerika. So there are probably hundreds of different ways to spell America.

"America". It is NOT named after Amerigo Vespucci. That is a myth that originated over 100 years after it was discovered by a German mapmaker and was accepted immediately by the Catholic church and spread by them. The real origin of the name is with the Knights Templar. Their coat of arms, dating from the 11th century, featured a sailing ship going west towards a large star named Merica, or, in French, La Merica. When the Templars were destroyed by the Catholic Church in the early 14th century, there were stories throughout France and Spain that the remnants of the order fled west over the Atlantic to settle in a new land. When Columbus brought back his first reports of "India" in the late 15th century, the rumors immediately spread that he had found the land that the Templars had fled to under the star La Merica. In French, there is no phonetic difference between La Merica and L'America, so the name for the new continent quickly became America, without anyone having ever heard of a second-rate, unknown sailor named Amerigo Vespucci. Since the Church needed to cover up any Templar connection to the name of the new continent, they quickly latched onto the false story about Vespucci that was nothing more than the wide guess of a German mapmaker who had no idea.
