Because they believe their ancestors come back as cows & monkeys & even rats!
They don't read the bible we do or especially the part where the deciple had a dream about all manner of food & beasts that were forbidden to jews to eat!It came down from heaven in a big tablecloth 3 times & a voice said,"Take & eat!"The deciple said."Lord i have never eaten that which is forbidden or common!"The voice said,"That which the Lord has cleansed, call thou not common or unclean!"
Jesus came & cleansed everything! That is why we can eat pork & oysters & shrimp,& every part of an animal which is edible these days!
It is just foolishness that will be revealed when Jesus comes back.

One explanation I heard years ago (sorry, can't remember the source) concerning the taboo on cow-eating:
If you eat the cow, you'll only get X amount of food for so many people. If you do NOT eat the cow, it can produce a lot more food for a longer time, because it can be used to plow in the fields (and thus grow more grain, which feeds more people). It will also produce milk and offspring, which will mean more food (assuming you have adequate pasturage).
It's not a matter of "too many cows", it's "not using the resources you have efficiently"---which is NOT a problem exclusive to Third World nations, by the way.

If you are a Hindu you don't eat meat. Its against their religion. India is just a poor country like others in the world. I believe India is poor because of the poor policies that are made and because it is over populated.

Cos,Cows are sacred animals in their religion;which is Hinduism.
They worshipped cows like their god.Cos in India Cows helped these villagers to do most things.Like their transport mode, their ploughing of crops.etc...
So its for these reasons they cant eat cows;beef.

Jeez, and there are people in America going hungry with so many stray dogs and cats on the streets...
See if you can get your hands on a documentary called Maharajah Burger. It explains it pretty well.

They believe you can be reincarnated into an animal, a cow and they fear they could be eating their deceased relatives.
