Have you ever owned a dog? I recommend going online find a breed you like and there are thousands beleive me.....and fill out fostering applications. that way you have the best of both worlds, saving a puppy from being put down and finding out what breed you may like. I have been fostering for 3 years now, and I think I have fallen in love with each breed. They are all different in many ways. Try a shih tzu they are really happy lap dogs just want to sit on you all day, they love to be carried arround and just loved. good luck.

There are so many choices out there - you really need to either go to a dog show and have a look at all the breeds or read an all-breed book. When you find a dog you like the looks of, then research that breed as regards to temperament, energy level (does it match yours?), health problems, grooming requirements, etc. People will all tell you to get whatever breed of dog is their favourite and it may be the entirely wrong dog for you. Good luck in your search!

Definitely a mutt- mixed breed dogs are the best- My lab/hound mix is great with my cat and the cats I have taken care of over the years-pretty much any young mixed breed dog will learn to get along with cats if introduced slowly over a period of say, 2 weeks....If you like a particular breed call around to the shelters and ask if they have any or any dogs that are part that breed.....The best dogs by far are mutts!

Cocker Spaniel, Brittany Spaniel, Red or Blue Healer, Jack Russell Terriers( not always good with cats) Going for the big side...Border Collie...had all of them... All good dogs! Healers were the most relaxed and least amount of upkeep. I have a Jack Russell right now and am thinking about getting a second one. My Border Collie was a real sweet heart, but lots of upkeep as far as brushing etc.

A shelter dog. Look on http://www.petfinder.com You can do a pet search on the left hand side and find just about any kind of dog you could ever want. No certain breed is going to be better than another one. It all depends on the individual dog.

If you go to www.dogbreedinfo.com and click on the survey you can take a quiz that will assess your needs and preferences and match you to dogs that will fit your lifestyle. You can then go to www.petfinder.com and find a breed match in the over 100 thousand dogs that are available through humane and rescue societies across the United States.

Mutts are my favourite! They are unique, less prone to breed-specific genetic problems, and they need a home. Plus they come in all sizes, shapes, and colours.

Try www.petfinder.org .... just take a look, you have nothing to lose. You can search your area for dogs by size or by age or both, and they will show you pics and descriptions of dogs in shelters and foster homes. Good luck!

Of the medium sized dogs, I like Boston Terriers, Pugs, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.. Non of those are usually cat aggressive...They are typically Mild mannered, and easily trained.

My daughter used to raise Persian cats, and we had a houseful of dogs and cats.. all of them got along.. I think part of the reason, was our expectations..We just expected them to get along, and they lived up to our expectations..

Hello , and welcome to "Real Pets World". Most animal lovers know that you are only fooling yourself , if you think you are a cat "owner". You are in it's life because it allowed you to be there and you are expendable ! having a dog as a companion is exactly that , companionship .A friend that probably couldn't force himself to leave your side. You are the reason he cherishes each day....where ever he ( and you ) are on any given day. An unconditional love that no spouse at any time in history has offered her mate . And , each time you arrive , after being away for 5 minutes , 5 hours or 5 days ,is as if the world had just been covered in gold. It is the happiest moment in his life. I'm sorry for my enhanced answer to your question . I delayed the answer to allow you to see how special a dog can become to you....through my eyes. You see , I own a rottweiller/shepard mix. His name is Frank " The Wonderdog " , and he is the best friend I have ( in 47 years ) had the pleasure of spending time with . He is also my favorite medium breed of dog. No , you cannot have my dog but perhaps you'll consider a rotty-mix after my testimonial . First - Some breeds have shown signs of anger and aggression in the past but in a mixed breed , it is extremely rare. I am not sure about the technical or clinical reason except for the fact that the " mix " part , dilutes agression . Rotts are fiercly loyal and are great protectors . In fact , the thought of being in a skirmish with a rott will discourage most every criminal . I actually leave my windows down , car doors unlocked and keys in the ignition whille shopping and I live in Los Angeles California . Potential thieves have no way of knowing that theres not a mean bone in his body but when they see Frank sitting proudly in the drivers seat , a better idea comes to mind .Rottweillers are also very intellegent. A lot of police forces use rotts for drug and bomb detection . I have no training in the area of K-9 training but my dog is a genius or I'm good at training . Frank is fluent in "snap" (as in finger snap commands) , directional ( as in pointing to places or areas) and voice commands ( as in he understands every word that comes from my lips ) As a matter of fact , if he walked up to me and said (in plain english) ,I think I'd prefer chicken as oppesed to beef tonight . I wouldn't be surprised but I'd head to the market to get that man a chicken !

As an afterthought....If I may make a suggestion....your local animal shelter/dog pound probably has one of these marvelous animals that is about to be euthinized because of it's unwanted status. Please rescue one of these dogs before you go out and purchase from a pet store. I can understand the reason that Rottweillers end up there. Pure breeds get too big too fast and can be a bit unnerving to be around because of their reputation and mixed breeds begause of their unbelievable stupidity for the first 3/4 year. Frank would have trouble finding his food bowl when I first got him . It takes alot of work and patience for them to blossom into the genius status. It is during this "stupid stage" that many get lost . I'm guessing that the reason it happened to Frank on three seperate occaisions is that he would follow a scent until he had gone too far to recognize anything and then wander til someone picked him up for " a ride ". Rotts are great worker dogs ( after stupidsville has past ), Frank acts as if he is proud when I leash him to a tree log thats too big for me to move alone. On the count of three , together we finish the work. One....Two...Three.........

You might want to try a Older Chichuaua. The older the dog the less they bark and they are still protective. and they are okay with small kittens and young cats.
