"use the wrong lanes for turning" I can relate to that yesterday a 3 lane roundabout:
Left lane for 1st exit and second exit
Middle lane for second exit only
Right lane for 3 rd exit only
The old man was in the left and just drifted over into the middle lane - lucky no-one was in the middle. It was clearly marked which lane is which

I think 60 is a fine age to be tested for driving! I recently rode from the Seattle airport to my house 80 miles away with my dad who is 62 and oh man... that was scary! He can't stay a certain speed, he jams the breaks, swerves for no apparent reason, and then he even got pulled over for speeding when I was with him. Luckily, he has a perfect driving record, so the sheriff let him go without a ticket.
I think a written test should be mandatory and if they get below a certain score, then a driving test should also be mandatory. It all depends on where these old people live though. There are cities that have plenty of opportunities for senior citizens to share rides or take public transportation and I am in full support of that.

It's an idea often spoken about but it will won't happen because there is a shortage of driving examiners. That's why you have to book your test so far in advance. With the extra tests needed to regularly test those over 60 or 65 the system would grind to a halt.

the 65 thing is already the case (but 80 upwards) and also need regular medicals very similar to the ones needed for HGV and PCV licences...
BUT i would rather be behind an old fuddy duddy doing 25mph that behind anyone doing 45 into a kiddy walking alone the path, sorry but true!
Sorry to disagree with a previous answer above from `mickster` but driving licences are not vaild for 50 years, they are valid until you are 80 years old regardless of age when you passed your test...

i think from 50 years old you need a retest every five years . you are right about the older generation going 25 miles an hour . they are not fit enough to drive and cause accidents .

They don't need the retest, as they will obviously pass it. What they need is the medical certifications that they are still capable of driving.
So, a medical check-up requirements should be required from them for every renewal of their driving licenses would be best applicable.

You sound a young pup?
Ask yourself how would you like to resit your test at 60 / 70 etc.
To many old drivers the car is the only way they can get around, so give them some understanding. You will be one of them one day.

British licences are only valid for 50 years so if you pass at 18 you'll have to take a re-test at 68
