An engagement ring means the guy wants to marry you. A promise ring means the guy wants to shut you up.

A promise ring is a promise to become engaged when the time is right. It is normally given if the couple is really young and ready to be married, but the time and finances aren't right. It traditionally is worn on the right hand to distinguish the difference between and engagement ring and is far less ornate (mine in an African Tribal ring). It is also sometimes given by conservative, religious folk as a promise to stay pure until the wedding. More liberal folk use it as a way to get lucky. In my experience, those that have promise rings are waiting to get engaged until they can start planning their wedding, they don't want to have a 4 year engagement, so it makes sense to wait until the year before they get married.
I got my promise ring last January, however we won't get engaged until I am a senior in college at the earliest. It is like we are engaged now (I am already planning the wedding-- put heck, I have done that since I was 4), but in my family and faith I am too young to get married. I have to wait to next January at the earliest, and it will most likely be the April after that.

a promise ring is actually better then an engagement ring I think. An engagement ring creates stress and worry. A promise ring is a sign of love and devotion and that there is no reason to worry that they love you. Im 25 my fiancee is 45 going to be 46. I gave an engagement ring to her not to long after we were together. Should have been a promise ring though. I wish I would have said it was a promise ring. If it is love you should be able to tell if not then kick him to the curb!

A promise ring is just that what it says; a promise that when the time is right (usually meaning when you are old enough) and you are still together, he will ask you to marry him. Guys outside of high school and maybe broke guys in college who want their girlfriend to know they're making an effort.
An engagement ring means he's gotten down on one knee and you're headed down the aisle in the average 18 months or less. At least, that's what it's supposed to mean.

i think there is a difference between and engagement and promise ring, though a promise ring shouldn't be given lightly.
i am getting married in October, and we've been together for 8 years (we were 15 when we first started dating). he got me a promise ring when we had been dating about 2 1/2 years, we didnt want to get married right out of high school so we said we'd wait until he graduated college, so we got engaged in June because he graduated in August, and we wanted a fall wedding.
i didn't want to be officially engaged until i was ready to start planning.

Technically, a promise ring is given to "promise" the girl that you will someday get engaged and married.
An engagement ring is given when you are going to plan to, and get, married.
But I sort of agree with the first poster. Seems like most of the time when a girl gets a "promise ring" it's really to shut her up since she is nagging the guy about getting engaged, and this is a way to get her off of his back.

A promise ring means that he just wants you to know that you are important to him right now. An engagement ring means that you sort of made a contract, an agreement that as long as you wear that ring, you will marry him.

(I thought promise rings were long gone.) A promise ring was intended kind of as a going-steady promise. An engagement ring is a promise to get married.
