For Taoism, the 'Tao Te Ching' is the closest thing to a "bible". However, as starter texts, I really enjoyed 'The Tao of Pooh' and 'The Te of Piglet'. They use the Winnie the Pooh characters to describe Taoism. Not only is it a friendly way to introduce a concept to a beginner, I feel it's actually a very appropriate way to explain the Tao, or Way.
Enjoy! :)
