I don't necessarily hate it, but I always have to confirm their answer because I'm not sure if they mean yes or no! ???

No I don't agree. Pass maybe, but certainly not "sass." If they meant sass you would know it and you wouldn't like it. Give them a break.

It depends on the tone of voice they use when they say "that's alright".

If they say the two words quickly, then it's just a nice way of saying no, and non-offensive. If they stretch the last word out, that's being a bit shirty and you should take offense.

Sorry, but I have said it too... I almost always preface it by saying, Yes or No and usually add a disclaimer or reason why.
Now THAT is probably even more annoying...but that is who I am...so... That's alright.

Some people might think that saying 'no' is a little abrupt, or gruff. Perhaps they say 'that's alright' because they want to put a little more into their response.

But then again, you have to hear how they say it.

No. I don't hate the people - just the words. It's akin to "I'm alright" when offered something instead of "No, thank you" or even "Don't bother me".

Hate is a strong word. No is better more direct but not worthy of hatred.

"That's all right" is different from yes or no. I do not like people who say this, but I do not love them either.
